Women's Wrestling 1-3 At CSC Duals

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State women's wrestling went 1-3 across a series of four duals on their home mat at the Chicoine Center as the Eagles began their dual season and RMAC season in 2024-25.

The Eagles started the day with a 26-24 win over Minot State before dropping a narrow 24-23 final to Snow College, the No. 4-ranked junior college program in women's wrestling. Chadron State was unable to grab a win in either RMAC dual on the day, falling 27-16 to Texas Woman's University and 35-11 to Simon Fraser.

A bright spot for the Eagles was freshman Sicily Frates out of Arvada, Colorado. Wrestling at 207 for the first time in her collegiate career after wrestling at 180 up until Friday, Frates went undefeated on the day for the Eagles, winning by fall against Minot State and by decision against Snow and TWU before she was the recipient of a forfeit at 207 against Simon Fraser.

Frates decided the first dual, as CSC trailed 24-21 heading into the 207-pound bout, but Frates came up back with a pin of Madilyn Schuck in 1:56 for five points, which swung the dual in Chadron State's favor.

CSC's lighter weights also had a good day overall. While Minot State forfeited at 103, 110 and 117 pounds, the Eagles went unbeaten on the mat at those weights against both Snow and Texas Woman's.

Against Snow College, the Eagles' Rylee Balcazar at 110 pounds and Shania Wear at 117 both recorded falls inside 90 seconds to stake CSC to an early lead. Snow controlled the middle weights, building a 22-17 advantage after eight weight classes.

Chadron State won the final two bouts, with Ella Shevlin winning a hard-fought 7-5 decision at 180 and Frates winning by a 6-3 decision, but the 3-1 scoring margins in each bout were not enough for the Eagles to pull ahead as Snow won by a point.

In CSC's first RMAC dual against Texas Woman's, the Eagles again jumped out to a lead. Returning national qualifiers Mana Chanthasone at 103 pounds and Heavynne Robles-Wright at 110 both won their first matches of the day 10-0 by tech fall before Shania Wear won again by the same margin at 117 as CSC led 12-0.

The Pioneers roared back to win the next six weight classes, however, building an insurmountable lead of 26-13 before Frates trimmed the deficit somewhat with a 7-1 decision victory at 207 to make the final 27-16.

Simon Fraser, picked to win the RMAC in the league's preseason poll, was impressive against CSC. The Eagles picked up forfeit wins at 103 and 207 and received their other single point from Karstin Hollen at 145 pounds. Simon Fraser also defeated Texas Woman's Friday.

CSC will be back in action tomorrow at the Chadron State Women's Open. All competing teams from today's duals (Adams State, Minot State, Snow College, Texas Woman's, Simon Fraser and CSC) will compete along with RMAC member Colorado Mesa, Jamestown and Utah Tech in addition to some unattached and Division I club wrestlers.
