Eagles go 2-0 for first wins of season

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The Chadron State College softball team went 2-0 to earn its first victories of the season against Colorado School of Mines in Lakewood, Colorado on Monday.

In game one, the Eagles scored five runs in the third inning and added one more in the top of the fourth on way to their first victory of the season.

Knotted at zero, a one out walk to Devyn Thornton gave CSC its first base runner of the inning. Jessie Henchenski, a senior from Fort Collins, Colorado, singled to third base, advancing Thornton to second.

Ashland Baca, a senior form Pueblo West, Colorado, scored the Eagles first run of the game with an RBI single down the left field line, bringing Thornton home.

A fly out to center field that advanced Henchenski to third base was the second out of the inning for CSC.

With Henchenski on third and Baca on first, Makenzi Kroll, a senior from Brighton, Colorado, launched a pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homerun, giving CSC a 4-0 lead.

After a pitching change by the Orediggers, Chadron State's next batter, Sophia Brennan, a freshman from Wahoo, Nebraska, only needed two pitches before homering down the left field line and extending the Eagles lead to five.

It didn't take long for Colorado School of Mines to answer CSC with runs of their own. The Orediggers loaded the bases due to an error by the Eagle defense and a walk. With two outs, a single to center field scored the first run of the game.

Colorado Mines added two more runs when the next batter singled up the middle, making the score 5-3. All three runs were unearned for the Orediggers.

Chadron State extended its lead to 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Henchenski singled through the left side before Baca advanced her to second with a single of her own.

Lauren Zimmerman, a junior from Reno, Nevada, hit a straight single for CSC to load the bases. Henchenski scored the sixth run for the Eagles when Kroll was walked.

The Orediggers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Runners were on the corners with two outs when an RBI single down the left field line made the score 6-4.

Colorado School of Mines left one runner on in the fifth inning and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to add any more runs, giving Chadron State its first victory of the season.

Kenzi Garner, a junior from Broomfield, Colorado, earned her first victory of the season in seven innings of work. She allowed seven hits and four runs while walking and striking out two batters a piece. All four runs were unearned.

The Eagles handed the Orediggers pitcher, Sadriena Rodriguez, her first loss of the season.

It took extra innings but CSC improved to 2-0 on the day and 2-12 on the season after a 10-inning, 3-2 victory in game two.

CSC started scoring in the top of the first inning when a single by Zimmerman scored Henchenski. The Orediggers tied the game at one in the bottom of the third and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. In the fifth, Mines hit three consecutive singles to bring a run home.

The Eagles had two innings to tie the game but only needed one batter to do so. On the second pitch she saw, Zimmerman homered to center field to tie the contest at two apiece.

Scoring was halted until Jessie Henchenski scored the game winning run in the top of the 10th inning for Chadron State. With one out, Henchenski hit a ball over the center field fence for a solo homerun, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead and victory.

The Orediggers began to manufacture a two out rally in the bottom of the seventh inning after a CSC defensive error but starting pitcher Tori Haug forced a swinging strike out to win the game.

Haug received her first victory of the year after pitching all ten innings. The senior from Commerce City, Colorado allowed eight hits and two runs while walking five batters and striking out six.

Henchenski had four hits and four runs in Monday's games. Kroll had a team high four RBI's in the victories.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 24, when they travel to Pueblo, Colorado for two doubleheaders with the Thunderwolves.
