CHADRON, Neb. – In a dual that came down to the heavyweight bout, Chadron State men's wrestling lost a narrow 21-19 dual to No. 23-ranked Colorado Mesa.
The Eagles won five of the 10 matchups, but two falls, both by the Mavericks, loomed large in the outcome of the overall dual and made up for a forfeit win for CSC at 184 pounds that wiped out the most anticipated bout of the night.
James Davis (133 pounds),
Brandon Paredes (157),
Tayten Gillette (165),
Logan Berger (174) and
Keegan Gehlhausen (184) were victorious on the day for Chadron State, which dropped to 0-2 in duals with the loss. Colorado Mesa remained undefeated at 7-0 in duals.
Three of the Eagles' wins were by decision. Two Mavericks earned bonus points, as Gillette recorded a major decision victory to earn four points for CSC's tally and Gehlhausen was the recipient of a forfeit due to a late scratch from CMU's No. 15-ranked Jason Bynarowicz.
Both potential nationally-ranked battles between the two teams did not come to fruition. In addition to Gehlhausen and Bynarowicz's showdown not happening, the Eagles went with redshirt senior
Yusef Nelson in favor of injured and No. 9-ranked
Hunter Jacobsen at 125 pounds, and Nelson was pinned by No. 7-ranked Dayson Torgerson to start the dual.
James Davis earned a significant 4-0 decision win at 133 over nationally-ranked Oran Huff, but another CMU pin at 141 and decision win at 149 gave the Mavericks a 15-3 lead after four matches.
Chadron State turned the tide of the dual in the middle weights.
Brandon Paredes began the turnaround with an 8-2 win over CMU's Sammy Mobly at 157 before
Tayten Gillette earned a major decision win by a 13-3 margin after nearly scoring a pin in the second period.
Logan Berger grinded out a 6-2 win over CMU's Gus Dalton before Gehlhausen's forfeit win gave the Eagles a 19-15 lead in the dual.
Colorado Mesa needed victories in the final two bouts of the night to pull out the win, and they got them. No. 13-ranked 197-pounder Gabriel Carranza and No. 11-ranked 285-pounder Tyler Doyle defeated CSC's
Dominic Joyce and
Cody Pinkerton, respectively, by decision to put the Mavericks ahead. Trailing in the match, Pinkerton mounted a valiant effort at a third-period pin, energizing the crowd, but Doyle wriggled out for a two-point reversal to help seal his 10-5 victory.
Chadron State will have its second and final home dual of the season next Friday against Western Colorado at 6 p.m. after the conclusion of a CSC women's dual.
