Availability Hurts Eagles Against Sioux Falls

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State scored more points on the mat, but two forfeits loomed large in a 28-20 dual loss to the University of Sioux Falls Friday evening in the Chicoine Center.

The Eagles won four of eight contested bouts, earning three wins by fall among their victories, but Chadron State was forced to concede at both 131 pounds and 160 pounds and spotted Sioux Falls 10 points via forfeit, which ended up being greater than the margin of victory.

The loss drops Chadron State's dual record to 1-5. Sioux Falls improved to 6-0.

Rylee Balcazar, Karstin Hollen and Esther Peters all pinned their opponents over the course of the dual, with Peters continuing her momentum after being named the RMAC Wrestler of the Week last Tuesday by the conference office.

Hollen earned a victory in her final home collegiate match, as the Mesa, Arizona native was one of two Eagles honored on the program's Senior Night. Hollen, who joined the program in 2021, is the last remaining member of the roster from Chadron State women's wrestling's inaugural season.

Junior Brianna Vollendroff got the home team off to a great start with a 10-0 tech fall in just 39 seconds at 103 pounds to give CSC a 4-0 lead, and Balcazar pinned her opponent in 1:41 at 110 pounds to put the Eagles up 9-0.

Sioux Falls countered with two pins of their own, plus the first of two forfeits, to take a 15-9 lead in the dual. The Cougars extended their lead further with an 18-8 tech fall win at 138, which put the visitors up 19-10.

Hollen's pin narrowed the deficit, but was immediately canceled out by the second forfeit of the night. Chadron State's Sicily Frates fell to USF's Kylie Hulse at 180 pounds to clinch the dual for USF before Peters's pin ended the match on a high note for CSC.

The Eagles wrap up the RMAC dual season next Thursday, January 30 against Adams State before Saturday's RMAC Championships held in Colorado Springs.
