After the first of two days, Chadron State's 42 team points are good for ninth out of 47 competing teams. The Eagles trail leaders Pitt-Johnstown by 18.5 points and sit just three points out of the top five and six points out of the top three. Chadron State is the top RMAC school in the team standings after one day of competition.
Gehlhausen cruised, pinning his first-round opponent in 1:34 and logging a 19-2 tech fall over an opponent from Jamestown in round two. Gehlhausen was tested in the third round against RMAC rival Hunter Richardson from Western Colorado – the CSC wrestler led the whole way, but Richardson kept it close, forcing Gehlhausen to grind out a 4-2 decision win to move to the quarterfinal.
The program's signature win on the day probably came from true freshman
Aidan Callahan, who has been making a name for himself at 149 with an Amateur bracket win at the UNK Open and a dual victory over a ranked wrestler from the same No. 1-ranked Lopers.
After going 1-1 in his first two matches, Callahan got another ranked win, toppling Glenville State's Gabe Onorato 2-1 on tiebreakers to stay in the consolation bracket. Onorato was ranked No. 13 by the NWCA and No. 9 by The Open Mat.
The Eagles went a combined 3-5 on day one against wrestlers who are nationally ranked by either the NWCA, Open Mat or both. 125-pounder
Quade Smith had two of those matches, losing in the first round to Open Mat No. 19 Braydon Mitchell before winning two straight consolation matches, the second of which was against NWCA No. 14 Sloan Johannsen of Northern State. Smith is 2-0 against Johannsen this season.
Chaves also had a ranked win as the Gannon transfer won both of his matches at 141 to move into the quarterfinals of that 45-man bracket. Chaves, ranked No. 15 by the NWCA, got a major decision win in his first match before knocking off No. 12/18-ranked Krayle Stormer of Northern State in the third championship round with a pin. Chaves was up in the bout 1-0 before earning the pin at 5:22.
The seven remaining wrestlers will all continue wrestling on Sunday, with the day scheduled to get underway at 7:30 MT/9:30 ET on FloSports and Trackwrestling.
