HAYS, Kan. – Esther Peters won a tournament title in her debut competition of 2025-26 and
Brianna Vollendroff also won her bracket to highlight four placers among 12 official competitors for Chadron State women's wrestling at the Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State on Saturday in Kansas.
Other than the two champions,
Sammy de Seriere's squad achieved a second-place finish at 124 pounds courtesy of
Ana Rojas-Zamora, who went 4-1 on the day, while redshirt freshman
Adrianna Lopez placed fourth at 117 pounds after going 4-2.
Wrestlers who did not place but still recorded multiple victories for CSC included
Shania Wear (3-2 at 117) and
Meredith Nash (3-2 at 138).
Trona Bates (117),
Nevaeh Leonard (138) and
Sicily Frates (180) each won once.
Peters, an All-American as a true freshman who had missed CSC's first five competition dates in her sophomore season, showed no signs of rust with a 3-0 day that included an 11-0 tech fall win in the semifinals and a pin in 1:19 over Fort Hays State's Grace Johns in the final. It is Peters's first tournament title this season after the Texas native won two brackets during her freshman season.
Brianna Vollendroff has won the 103-pound title in back-to-back competitions after doing so two weeks ago at the Minot State Open. Vollendroff continued to be dominant, winning by 10-0 and 12-1 tech falls over the first two rounds over Schreiner and Tarleton State wrestlers, then pinned Fort Hays's Jaidyn Alvarado in 1:33 in the semis and beat Schreiner's Jackelyn Sanchez in 3:52.
Rojas Zamora advanced all the way to the championship bout, falling to regionally ranked Morgan Maschmann from Fort Hays State, but won four matches in a row before that including two by 10-0 tech fall and one by pin.
Adrianna Lopez fell in the quarterfinals but won three consolation matches, including a 5-3 decision win over her teammate
Shania Wear, before falling again in the third place match.
Chadron State's next competition will be on Sunday, December 14 in the North Central Open in Naperville, Ill., generally regarded as one of the premier regular season events for women's wrestling.
