DICKINSON, N.D. – Chadron State women's wrestling was dominant at the Dickinson State Open, winning five of 10 contested weight classes as 17 of their 20 wrestlers secured top-six places during CSC's season-opening competition on Saturday.
Mana Chanthasone (103 pounds), Rylee Balcazar (110 pounds), Adrianna Lopez (117 pounds), Martynique Davis (131 pounds), and Katie Snyder (160 pounds) all were tournament champions on Saturday. Chanthasone, Balcazar and Lopez went 3-0 to take the title, while Davis and Snyder needed to go 4-0 to top their brackets.
Chadron State's placings didn't stop with the winners. Westcliff University transfer Zitlali Sarmiento (131) was the runner-up to Davis, going 3-1, while Imperial, Nebraska freshman Hayley Rusher earned a second-place finish in the 145-pound bracket, going 2-1. A fellow freshman, Quinn Butler, finished 4-1 and placed third at 145 to give CSC two of the top three in that bracket, while Regan Rosseter also got on the podium, going 4-1 and placing third at 138 pounds.
Other top-six finishers include Jasimen Ortega (4th, 124), Samantha Harper (4th, 160), Meredith Nash (5th, 124), Nevaeh Leonard (5th, 138), Josephine Rettich (5th, 145), Jinet Demanou (5th, 180), Maria Arellano (5th, 207), and Sage Wheatley (6th, 117). Also competing were Jolee Gewecke (145 pounds), Lydia Cox (160) and Cosette Desrosiers (180).
The tournament featured over 100 wrestlers from eight teams, including Division II opponents Jamestown, Minot State and Sioux Falls in addition to some NAIA competition. The Eagles had success despite reigning national qualifiers Piper Cadden and Esther Peters not competing.
Chanthasone's return to competition was a triumphant one after redshirting the 2025-26 season. The Kansas native didn't even let a match go the distance, winning by tech fall in both the quarterfinal and semifinal before earning a pin in 2:18 to beat Minot State's Kaiya Lopes in the final.
Balcazar, who won two tournament titles last season, already has one in 2026-27. The No. 12-ranked 110-pounder (according to HerMat, formerly known as The Open Mat) won by tech fall three times, defeating Dickinson State's Piper Montoya in the final.
Lopez, the reigning RMAC Freshman of the Year, showed no signs of a sophomore slump. Lopez went a perfect 3-for-3 with pins, taking 2:48, 0:25 and 2:57 to record falls in her three bouts.
True freshman Martynique Davis made a statement by winning a 14-wrestler bracket in her first collegiate competition. Davis did not allow a point in four matches, needing only 20 seconds to earn a 10-0 first-round tech fall, then recording a quarterfinal pin. Davis won 11-0 in the semifinal, then beat teammate Zitlali Sarmiento 11-0 in 4:26 in the 131-pound final.
Another freshman, Hot Springs HS grad Katie Snyder, beat a field of 14 160-pound wrestlers in her collegiate debut to be CSC's fifth champion, and likely its most dominant. Snyder pinned four opponents on her rampage through the bracket, with no match lasting longer than 63 seconds. Snyder won in 38 seconds in the first round, 28 seconds in the quarterfinal and 34 seconds in the final.
The Eagles will return to the mat next weekend at the two-day Missouri Valley Open in Marshall, Missouri on November 13-14.
