Top Step
Chayton Bynes is already a reigning indoor All-American in the triple jump, but if he wasn't on anybody's radar before, he certainly is now.
Bynes went nuclear at last Saturday's Wildcat Invite in Wayne, Nebraska with a mark of 16.02 meters (52 feet, 6.5 inches). That broke a seven-year-old school record previously held by Isaac Grimes.
The leap is the No. 1 mark in the nation by a Division II athlete this season, 2.25 inches farther than the second-best DII jump. Bynes's jump is over one-and-a-half feet ahead of the nearest RMAC competitor and was seven feet ahead of second place at the Wayne State meet.
Bynes is one of six RMAC athletes that have already hit the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of over 14.54 meters.
Leaps and Bounds
The Eagles have a triple jump star on the women's side as well.
Camila Salvucci set a facility record at WSC with her mark of 11.93 meters (39 feet, 1.75 inches).
Salvucci's jump was the second-longest in the RMAC overall and the longest in the conference since December. Despite the high slot on the performance charts, Salvucci still has four inches to go until her career best of 39-5.75 set last season.
Athletes of the Week
Bynes and Salvucci added to their accolades when they swept the RMAC's Men's and Women's Field Athlete of the Week awards.
