Bynes, Williams, Alles Star at Midweek Meet

GOLDEN, Colo. – Chayton Bynes had two top-two finishes, Courtney Williams leads the decathlon halfway through and Chadron State dominated the women's hammer throw and men's 200 meters on day one of the Mines Midweek & Multi on Wednesday.

Bynes shared a triple jump event win with Northern Colorado's Kaliff Guevara. Both jumpers leapt 15.03 meters (49 feet, 3.75 inches), with Bynes hitting that exact mark twice on his fifth and sixth jumps. Bynes's outdoor season best is 15.73 meters (51-7.25), which also ranks No. 2 in Division II this season.

Bynes also came second in the long jump event. Bynes recorded a mark of 6.82 meters (22 feet, 4.5 inches) and then passed on his remaining four attempts. Bynes was the top DII long jump finisher at the meet.

In the sprints, Chadron State put all its eggs in the 200-meter basket, as many of the Eagles' star sprinters that usually compete in both the 200 and 400 only raced the shorter distance on Wednesday.

CSC had seven of the 16 competitors in the 200-meter field, but all seven placed within the top nine, including a sweep of the podium places by Ryan Clapper (21.28 seconds), Ayden Hartzell (21.35) and Christopher Cormier (21.78).

Esosa Iyengunmwena came fifth while still breaking 22 seconds, crossing in 21.99, before another trio of CSC competitors finished seventh (Augustin Chiang, 22.26), eighth (Kevin Day, 22.27) and ninth (Kadin Perez, 22.34).

Hartzell hit a career-best by over two tenths while Cormier notched a season-best by 0.16 seconds and was two tenths off his career best. Clapper ran under 21.3 seconds for his second straight meet.

Women's sprinters who placed include Wongel Molla (third in the 100 meters, 12.61 seconds) and Laynie Goertz (sixth in the 200, 26.51 seconds). Molla tied a career-best with her dash.

Chadron State had a solid day in the throws as well. On the women's side, Sydney Alles also got an opportunity to compete in the invite portion of the hammer throw alongside an elite field of nine, primarily Division I competitors.

Alles laid down a massive mark of 51.33 meters (168 feet, 5 inches), beating her personal best by over nine feet. Pending other results, it will move Alles up to the No. 5 mark in the RMAC.

In the main women's hammer throw competition, the Eagles placed second, third and fourth. Collecting those places were Ashlyn Tapio (45.52m/149-4), Kristie Jordan (42.82m/140-6), and Shelby Ekwall (42.19m/138-5).

Jordan and Ekwall both tallied career-bests, with Jordan eclipsing her old mark of 42.62m/139-10 from the Chadron meet earlier this season by eight inches and Ekwall beating out her old career best of 41.82/137-2 from the Central Nebraska Challenge by 15 inches.

On the men's side, Quade Jordan placed second in the hammer throw with a heave of 50.94 meters (167 feet, 1 inch). That mark is a career-best for Jordan by six-and-a-half feet.

Thursday's meet will feature the conclusion of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Chadron State's Courtney Williams is on top of a field of 14 decathletes through five of 10 events while teammate Ethan Norris is currently fifth.

Williams placed third in the 100 meters, won the long jump, then placed fourth in the shot put, third in the high jump and second in the 400 meters. He has accumulated 3,644 points and has a 155-point lead over second-place Nicholas Stade and a 340-point lead over third-place Vaughn Hafner, both of Colorado School of Mines.

In the heptathlon, CSC's two competitors are Kailey Klein and Brenna Fackrell, who rank 11th and 13th, respectively, among 15 competitors through four of seven events.

The multis will continue Thursday, with the decathlon starting at 12:30 p.m. and the heptathlon resuming at 12:40 p.m.
