Eagles hope to keep winning ways

The basketball teams from Chadron State and Black Hills State will renew their long-standing rivalries on a regular basis beginning Saturday night, when the Yellow Jackets visit Armstrong Gymnasium for a women's game at 6 p.m.

The games will count in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. It's the first time the schools have been in a conference together, but for many years both the men's and the women's teams played annually in each other's gyms.

The Chadron State and Black Hills women's team met for the first time in 1974-75, two years after the Eagles had started their women's program. The Eagles won the initial contest 48-42 and also won the next four times before Black Hills took a 79-78 verdict.

CSC holds a 38-11 bulge in the all-time series, but Black Hills won last year's only date, 68-55. The teams have played just five times in the new century with the Yellow Jackets winning three of those games.

This year, the Eagles are 2-10 while Black Hills is 3-9.

Both teams defeated Adams State last weekend, when the Lady Jackets prevailed 61-38 and the Eagles won 85-75 behind Kattie Ranta's 40-point outburst.

Both also have defeated Western State in RMAC play. CSC won 78-70 and Black Hills won 64-50. The Jackets also beat Montana State-Billings 65-63 on Nov. 11. Billings topped the Eagles 79-64 the next night in Chadron.

Black Hills' only double figure scorer is 5-10 sophomore Chelsey Biegler at 15.4 points a game. She made five of eight 3-pointers while scoring 31 points during an 80-71 loss to Fort Lewis on Saturday night.
