ALAMOSA, Colo. –
Michael Madkins rushed for 217 yards and a touchdown and added a 74-yard scoring strike to lead the Chadron State College football team to a rousing 45-31 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Adams State Saturday.
The Eagles spoiled the Grizzlies' homecoming just 15 seconds into the first quarter when Madkins completed a halfback pass to
Danny O'Boyle for a 74-yard touchdown. Following an Adams State three-and-out, Chadron State struck on its next drive when quarterback
Jonn McLain, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 169 yards, hooked up with
Austen Stephens for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
McLain, the all-time leader in school history with 83 touchdown passes, found his receivers four times in the end zone Saturday and helped guide the Eagles' offense to a season-high 575 yards.
Following another Grizzlies' three-and-out, the CSC offense drove 58 yards in nine plays and McLain hit
Kyle Vinich for a 14-yard TD and the rout was on. Vinich, who had five receptions for 83 yards, added another receiving touchdown in the second quarter. Stephens, who had three catches for 20 yards, also scored another TD in the second quarter.
The Eagles dominated the first half, gaining 377 yards on offense and limiting Adams State to only 80. CSC also converted seven of nine third down conversions and took a 38-10 lead heading into halftime when kicker
Randy Wentz nailed a career-long 47-yard field goal.
Adams State made things interesting in the second half when J.R. Watters caught back-to-back touchdown passes from quarterback Auston Hillman to cut the CSC lead to 38-24. Chadron State answered with its ground game, though, and Madkins rushed for 66 yards and a TD and the Eagles owned the ball for more than 10 minutes in the fourth quarter en route to their ninth-straight win over the Grizzlies.
For the game, Madkins carried the ball 30 times and averaged 7.2 yards a carry. As a team, CSC rushed for 310 yards and eight different receivers caught at least one pass.
Ryan Wood and
Isaac Holscher each had six tackles to lead the CSC defense, which stifled Adams State's offense all game. The Grizzlies finished with 278 yards and converted just two of 11 third downs. Holscher,
Dylan Furrier and
Collin Eisenman all had sacks and
Cole Montgomery added an interception.
