The Chadron State College football team will wrap up the season Saturday by playing Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Kickoff is set for noon.
Â
The Eagles are 7-3 for the season and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Another win will allow them to match last year's season and conference records.
Â
Fort Lewis has been an enigma this season. In late September, the Skyhawks, who are 3-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference, were walloped by Black Hills State (40-14) and New Mexico Highlands (45-10).
Â
They also lost to Western New Mexico (24-17) before dropping a bombshell on then No. 2-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo by taking a 23-22 verdict in Durango on Oct. 11.
Â
Fort Lewis's upset ended Pueblo's 42-game regular-season winning streak and the Skyhawks were the first RMAC team to defeat the ThunderWolves since mid-October 2010 when Nebraska-Kearney topped them 38-24.
Â
Pueblo had won 34 conference games in a row when the Skyhawks snapped the streak.
Â
Since then, Fort Lewis has lost to Colorado Mines 56-14, beat Colorado Mesa 28-20 and lost to Western State 27-26 and Adams State 34-30.
Â
Fort Lewis led Adams State 23-7 at halftime before the Grizzlies rallied. Â
Â
"We know they'd like to spring another upset on us," said CSC coach
Jay Long. "They've improved their defense and seem to be quite a bit better now than they were when we played them a year ago."
Â
The Eagles won last year's game 34-10 in Chadron.
Â
Neither P.J. Hall, the Skyhawks' leading rusher for the season, nor quarterback Jordan Doyle, the team's passing leader and second leading rusher, played against Adams State.
Â
Hall had carried 149 times for 704 yards and Doyle had run for 428 yards and completed 151 of 272 passes for 1,507 yards this season before they missed last Saturday's contest. Â
Â
Hall is listed as the probable starter against the Eagles, but Doyle is not on the two-deep list at quarterback. Hall is a 5-foot-6, 170-pound redshirt freshman.
Â
Trevor Bonifasi, a 6-0, 180-pound sophomore, was the signal caller against Adams State. He completed 13 of 24 passes for 173 yards.
Â
A couple of Chadron State seniors can achieve milestones with even below par performances against Fort Lewis.
Â
Quarterback
Jonn McLain needs 167 yards to catch Trevor Moon as the Eagles' career passing yardage leader, and with only 17 yards
Michael Madkins can become the 10
th CSC running back to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season.
Â
Madkins has 173 carries for 983 yards through the first 10 games to rank fourth on the RMAC list this season.
Â
Another CSC tailback, sophomore
Cody Paul, is second on the team in rushing yards with 81 carries for 543 yards, a 6.6-yard average. Paul leads the conference in kickoff returns with 20 for 577 yards, an average of 28.9 yards.
Â
The Skyhawks' Juquelle Thompson is second in returns with 18 for a 27.4-yard average.
Â
The Eagles, with Madkins and Paul sharing the ball carrying duties with redshirt freshman
Derek Jackson, lead the RMAC in rushing offense at 206.7 yards a game. Jackson has rushed 62 times for 421 yards for 6.8-yard average.
Â
Jackson's 75-yard touchdown run against Western New Mexico on Saturday was the longest rushing play of the season for the Eagles.
