Western New Mexico, which is adept at both running and throwing the football, will help wrap up the Chadron State Eagles' home schedule on Saturday. Kickoff for the Senior Day tilt will be noon.
The Mustangs feature Marques Rodgers, a 5-foot-10, 173-pound redshirt freshman who rushed 23 times for 222 yards last Saturday while helping his team rally past Adams State 40-36. Rodgers' splurge sent him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He has now carried 174 times for 1,003 yards, an average of 5.8 yards.
A strong candidate for the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year, Rogers also has caught 25 passes for 298 yards, including a 70-yarder for a touchdown.
Western's potent passing attack is triggered by junior Mitch Glasmann. He connected on 23 of 45 passes for 347 yards as the Mustangs overcame a 29-16 deficit by scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter Saturday to topple the Grizzlies.
For the season, Glasmann has completed 219 of 411 passes for 2,940 yards and 27 touchdowns. He's been intercepted 12 times.
Glasmann's favorite target is Donald Byrd, a 5-10, 180-pound junior who ranks second in the RMAC in receptions and yards receiving behind only New Mexico Highlands' Tyler Slavin. Byrd has caught 66 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Eagles enter their 10
th game with a 6-3 seasonal record and a 5-2 conference log. The Mustangs are 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
After splitting their two non-conference games, the Mustangs were defeated 59-38 by Highlands and 45-7 by defending RMAC champion CSU-Pueblo, but have played them close since then.
Western bested Fort Lewis 24-17 before losing to Colorado Mines 44-37 and Colorado Mesa 45-35. During the last two weeks, the Mustangs have come from behind to spill Western State 48-38 and Adams State 40-36.
The Mustangs' three touchdown drives in the final period against Adams State covered 80, 63 and 75 yards. They also kicked a 32-yard field goal late in the game.
The Eagles won last year's game that was played in Silver City 59-17 while rushing for 469 yards, including 252 by senior
Glen Clinton. CSC quarterback
Jonn McLain also clicked on 21 of 29 passes.
