Box Score AUSTIN – The Chadron State College softball team found its offense Saturday in a 4-3 victory over St. Edward's in eight innings.
The Eagles, now 2-6, had only six hits in two games during the opening day of the St. Edward's Softball Invitational, but CSC's offense got on track during its only game Saturday, piling up 11 hits.
Chadron State will play Texas A&M International Sunday morning before closing out the tourney against No. 14-ranked Texas Woman's University in the afternoon.
The Eagles wasted little time getting its offense going during Saturday's thriller.
Rebekah Anthony, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, led off with a double. Shortstop
Taylor Bauer, who also had two hits, followed with a single to move Anthony to third and
Jessica Eatmon drove her in during the ensuing at-bat.
The Hilltoppers (8-5) responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead but Chadron State scored two runs in the top of the fourth regain its advantage.
Casey Polk led the fourth off with a single and
Caroline Johnson, who was pinch running for Polk, scored after an RBI single from Bauer. Eatmon then reached on an error that allowed Anthony to score and the Eagles led, 3-2.
The Hilltoppers scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3 to set up the late game drama.
In the top of the eighth,
Courtney Lecher was placed on second base at the beginning of the frame and
Sarah Knudsen drove her in with a two-out double.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Hilltoppers sacrificed a runner over to third but
Breeze Phillips, who scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs, got the final two outs.
Also for Chadron State,
Shea Graham had two singles and a double.
