Eagles split with Mustangs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHADRON – Chadron State's Courtney Lecher hit a two-run single and the Eagles scored a late run on an infield error to earn a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon in Chadron.
 
In the second game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader, Western New Mexico claimed a 5-3 victory.
 
The two teams will play another double dip Sunday in Chadron. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
 
The Eagles, now 12-16 and 9-7 RMAC, had a tough time getting their offense going in the opening game and trailed the Mustangs, 2-0 after Mary Othon hit a two-run home run. However, Taylor Bauer drew a walk in the third inning and she scored shortly after Sarah Knudsen hit a deep single.
 
The Mustangs added to their lead in the top of the fifth when Othon hit an RBI single but the Eagles' responded when Lecher ripped a two-run single through the left side in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
 
Chadron State took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth Jessica Eatmon found her way to home plate following an infield error.
 
Pitcher Kylee Polsley secured the victory in the top of the seventh by fanning two of the three Western New Mexico batters. Polsley, who threw 169 pitches in the complete game, improved to 8-5 in the circle. She scattered 12 hits and struck out seven.
 
The Eagles finished the game with five hits. Knudsen had two of them and Katie Londo, Bauer and Lecher also had hits.
 
In the second game, Western New Mexico had nine hits and Kale Gahn hit a two-run homer en route to its 5-3 win. The Eagles scored two runs in the second inning after Casey Polk hit a sacrifice fly but Gahn answered with her homer and the Mustangs scratched a run across in the fourth and sixth innings to keep Chadron State at bay.
 
Chadron State's offense was better in the second game – the Eagles had eight hits – but stranded seven runners on base.
 
Lecher led the Eagles going 3-for-3 at the plate and Eatmon added an RBI single.
