Box Score 2 CHADRON – The Chadron State College softball team earned two key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victories during its doubleheader with Western New Mexico.
The Eagles defeated the Mustangs 8-6 in the first game and then claimed a wild 16-15 victory in the series finale. With the Sunday sweep, Chadron State improves to 14-16 overall and 11-7 in the RMAC.
Chadron State benefitted from big third innings in each game, scoring six runs in each frame.
Western New Mexico owned a 5-1 lead after two innings but the Eagles' offense came alive in the third inning of the first game.
Katie Londo hit an RBI single,
Jessica Eatmon then followed with a two-run double and
Katelyn Kruger blasted a three-run home run to left field that gave the Eagles a 7-5 lead.
Following two scoreless innings, Kruger gave the Eagles an insurance run when she singled to shortstop to score
Courtney Lecher.
Western New Mexico's Stephanie Higgins hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh but
Breeze Phillips, who earned the win in relief by pitching 4 1/3 innings, got the final two outs to ground out.
The Eagles finished with 10 hits in the game and Kruger had three of them.
Shea Graham went 2-for-3 and
Sarah Knudsen added a solo home run.
In the second game, Chadron State jumped on Western New Mexico early and led 13-2 after three innings but the Mustangs scored six runs in the fourth and five more in the seventh to make things interesting. However, Chadron State's
Kylee Polsley got the final three outs in the seventh to secure the Eagles' victory.
Like the first game, Chadron State had 10 hits, but five of them went for extra bases. Londo hit a three-run home run, Eatmon had a two-run shot and both
Zoe Humphries and
Taylor Bauer smacked back-to-back homers. The other extra base hit was
Rebecca Wetsch's triple.
Humphries led CSC with two hits and three RBIs. Londo and Wetsch also had three runs driven in.
Also for CSC, Graham and
Rebekah Anthony knocked in a run.
