Box Score 2 CHADRON – The University of Sioux Falls took advantage of Chadron State College miscues during their non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday in Chadron.
The Cougars, who were playing in Chadron for the first time, won the first game 11-1 and followed with a 9-7 victory. With the wins, Sioux Falls improves to 5-3 this season, while Chadron State falls to 5-11.
The Eagles will have a chance to get back on track Saturday and Sunday when they play a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series at Regis.
In the first game, Sioux Falls scored two runs in the first inning and then exploded for nine runs – eight of them unearned because they came after three CSC errors – in the top of the third inning to put the game out of reach.
Erin Scott and Betsy Thomas each drove in two runs and pitcher Amanda Walters carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning during her complete game victory.
Chadron State's
Zoe Humphries broke up Walters' gem in the bottom of the fifth with a double and then
Caroline Johnson followed with an RBI single to provide the Eagles' only offense.
The Eagles' bats fared better in the second game but they still fell victim to a big inning from Sioux Falls as the Cougars scored five runs off four hits and a costly error in the top of the first inning to open the game with a 5-0 advantage.
Chadron State got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, though, when
Rebecca Wetsch hit a two-run home run. Following a three-run third inning from Sioux Falls, the Eagles managed to make things interesting by scoring twice in the fourth and sixth innings.
In the fourth inning,
Rebeka Prokaski belted a double to center field that scored
Morgan Wilhelm and Johnson and CSC hit a pair of solo homers in the sixth when
Caity Pelayo and Tayler Bauer took Sioux Falls pitcher Bailey Bouman deep.
However, Bouman helped her own cause in the top of the seventh by hitting a solo home run that put the Cougars up, 9-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Pelayo drove in a run after a sacrifice fly and the Eagles had runners on first and third, but Walters, who was pitching in relief, got the final two batters out to secure Sioux Falls' victory.
Pelayo, Prokaski and
Casey Polk all had two hit for Chadron State.
