Eagles split with Skyhawks; Polsley sets single season wins mark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHADRON – Although the final game of the regular season didn't end the way the Chadron State College softball team wanted it to, there's no doubt the 2014 campaign will be one to remember.

The Eagles split a doubleheader with Fort Lewis Saturday – CSC won the first game 3-2 before suffering a 12-5 setback in nine innings in the series' finale – to finish the season with a record of 27-21 and a 23-11 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Eagles had never won more than 25 games in a season until this year.

The Eagles aren't done playing yet. Chadron State clinched its spot in the RMAC postseason tournament last week and its opponent and the host school will be announced Sunday.

In the first game, Kylee Polsley set the school record for most wins in a season when she got her 16th victory in a gritty 3-2 decision. She allowed two runs and three hits in the first inning but then settled down and gave up only one hit the remainder of the game. She also finished with five strikeouts.

The Eagles finished with five hits in the game but three of them went for extra bases. Katie Londo, who went 2-for-3, hit a triple in the bottom of the first to score Courtney Lecher, and Shea Graham and Casey Polk both hit solo home runs to lift Chadron State to its victory.

In the second game, the Eagles trailed the Skyhawks 5-1 after the top of the fifth inning but Rebecca Wetsch, who hit a solo homer in the first inning, ripped a three-run round tripper to center field in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 5-4.

The Eagles tied things up in the bottom of the seventh when Lecher stroked a single to center field that scored Graham.

Both teams failed to score in the eighth inning but Fort Lewis hit three home runs in the top of the ninth to pull out the 12-5 win.
