CHADRON – The Chadron State College football team opened its 100th season in school history with a wire-to-wire 42-25 victory over Missouri Science and Technology Saturday at Elliott Field.
Â
Wide receiver
Kyle Vinich had 10 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown, and quarterbacks
Jonn McLain and
Patrick O'Boyle provided plenty of highlights through the air and ground in CSC's 58th victory in its season opener.
Â
McLain completed 22 of 32 passes for 260 yards and O'Boyle led the team in rushing with 77 yards and a touchdown. O'Boyle also completed all three of his passes for 91 yards and connected with
Andrew Rios on a 22-yard TD toss early in the second quarter.
Â
The Eagles came out firing in the first quarter.
Cody Paul, who rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, returned the opening kickoff 49 yards to the Miners' 45-yard line. McLain then found Vinich on two straight completions before S&T's Will Brown caromed an interception in the end zone.
Â
Following a three and out on Missouri S&T's opening drive, the Eagles responded with a nine-play, 52-yard drive, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown grab from Vinich.
Â
Chadron State drove deep in Missouri territory on its next drive but missed a field goal. However, the Eagles responded by scoring touchdowns – Rios and
Michael Madkins both found pay dirt – on their next two possessions to take a 21-0 lead.
Â
Missouri S&T ended the half with an 11-play, 80-yard drive when quarterback Kason Key, who completed 30 of 55 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, found Melvin Stovall for a 3-yard score.
Â
Both teams traded rushing TDs in the third quarter and Missouri S&T cut the Eagles' lead to 35-25 with six minutes to play when Nick Taylor caught a 15-yard strike from Key.
Â
The Eagles didn't wilt, though, and eventually pushed their lead higher after a 45-yard rushing TD from O'Boyle and a 17-yard scamper from Madkins.
Â
The two teams both appeared to be in midseason form, combining to gain over 1,000 yards. Chadron State finished with 563 yards and Missouri S&T had 486. The Eagles were five of nine on third down conversions, while S&T converted just five of 17. The Miners did, however, convert five of eight fourth down attempts.
While Vinich stole the show offensively, eight other receivers caught at least one pass. Madkins had five grabs for 36 yards and
Austen Stephens had three receptions for 74.
Â
Conor Casey,
Isaac Holscher and
Lane Haller each lead CSC with nine tackles.
Cole Montgomery added six tackles and an interception and
Tanner Wintholz had a sack.
At halftime, the Chadron State athletic department honored its All-Century Football Team. Forty-five of the 58 players returned for the festivities.
