POCATELLO, Idaho—The Chadron State College football team scored four of the final five touchdowns to give Idaho State fans a scare here Saturday afternoon, but time ran out on the Eagles and the Bengals escaped with a 39-34 win.
Chadron State drove 81 yards for the game's opening touchdown, but the Bengals pretty well dominated the remainder of the first half and also scored on their first possession in the second half to take a 33-6 lead.
Each team added a touchdown in the remainder of the third period, but the Eagles dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Idaho State 21-0.
The Chadron State surge began when the Bengals' field goal attempt was blocked by lanky receiver
Ethan Bauer and
Jordan Jones, a cornerback, took the loose pigskin 80 yards to the opposite end of the field.
The Eagles also scored on a 39-yard sprint by tailback
Michael Madkins with 7:44 to play and added another touchdown on a 25-yard pass from quarterback
Jonn McLain to
Danny O'Boyle, who made a diving catch in the end zone with 1:22 remaining.
With the gap suddenly closed to just five points, Chadron State attempted an onside kick, but the Bengals claimed it and converted on a fourth and one situation to keep the Eagles from possessing the ball again.
"Our players kept battling and we made a lot of big plays in the fourth quarter," said CSC coach
Jay Long. "After our opening drive, we struggled for quite a while, but we certainly finished strong. We always fight to the end."

Michael Madkins carried 21 times for 115 yards.
