CHADRON, Neb. -- November 23, 2015 - After being tied 33-33 at halftime, the Chadron State College men's basketball team took the lead early in the second half and went on to post a 69-61 victory over Montana State-Northern here Monday night.
The win was the second in two days for the Eagles, who defeated Dickinson State of North Dakota 84-79 on Sunday while opening their home schedule.
CSC coach
Brent Bargen said the win over Northern, which had a 7-0 record, was another team victory. After all 11 Eagles scored against Dickinson, nine reached the scoring column Monday night and 10 grabbed at least one rebound.
Rebounding was one of the Eagles' big advantages. Led by point guard
Sharif Black's nine, Chadron State collected 49 rebounds compared to Northern's 26. Eighteen of CSC's rebounds were off the offensive glass while the Lights managed just four offensive rebounds.
"We didn't shoot particularly well (43.1 percent from the field) or share the basketball (eight assists) as well as we should, but a lot of players contributed and we defended the three-point line well, particularly in the second half," Bargen noted.
The Lights came into the game averaging 81.9 points a game, with nearly half of them coming from behind the arc. The Montana team was 8-of-22 for a total of 24 points from afar against the Eagles, and made only two of nine three-point shots in the second half.
One of the Lights, senior guard Warren Edmondson, literally "shot the lights out" in the first half, when he made seven of eight field goal attempts, including all five of his 3-pointers for 19 of his team's 33 points. But he scored just three more points, all from the free throw line, in the second half.
Dave Straughter, a 6-foot-6 junior, added 13 points and collected a team-high six rebounds for the visitors, but none of the other Lights finished with more than seven points.
Sophomore forward
Jordan Perry paced the Eagles with 14 points on five of seven shooting from the field and four-of-four from the free throw line. Guard
Warren Gordon added 11 points and both guard
Justyn Anderson and center Davante McCallum contributed eight points.
McCallum also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
The Eagles' next game will be Saturday night against the Northern State Wolves at Aberdeen, South Dakota.
