Softball to face tough foes in Texas

CHADRON – Chadron State College's softball team will compete in the West Texas Woodward Invitational hosted by defending national champions, West Texas A&M Friday through Sunday in Canyon, Texas. The Eagles will face Tarleton State University and Midwestern State University Friday and Texas Women's University and No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday. The Eagles finish Sunday against Cameron University and Angelo State University.

Chadron State (0-6) will look to find its first victory of the year against good competition. The Eagles are led by sophomore Zoe Humphries, hitting .375 thus far with a solo home run and a slugging percentage of .750.

Also for the Eagles, pitcher Cierra Cosslett and first basemen Katelyn Kruger both have a batting average of .286 in seven at bats. Shortstop Courtney Lecher and catcher Casey Polk lead the Eagles with 17 and 14 at bats, respectively.

Defensively, the Eagles have seven double plays in just six games, having completed just 20 in the 2014 season. CSC pitcher Tayler Hall leads the team with 10 strikeouts, while Cosslett has seven in one start. Lecher leads the team with 12 infield assists.

The Eagles will face two nationally-ranked opponents. Tarleton (6-1) has had five games decided by three or less runs, while Midwestern State (3-3) has three losses to nationally-ranked opponents and one victory over No. 4-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma. Texas Women's University (1-5) has a single victory in a 10-1 performance over Colorado Mesa University and losses to RMAC members Regis University and Metro State University. No. 1-ranked West Texas A and M (4-1) suffered a loss to No. 16-ranked St. Mary's, but also has a victory over No. 3-ranked Dixie State in eight innings. No. 11-ranked Angelo State University (6-0) has two victories over Colorado School of Mines, and Cameron has yet to begin play.
