Mustangs get 74-70 overtime win

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- January 16, 2016 -- The Chadron State College men's basketball team (5-10, 3-8 RMAC) got nipped in overtime tonight, falling 74-70 to Western New Mexico University (1-15, 1-10 RMAC).

Despite leading for over 30 minutes and holding a double-digit second half lead, the Mustangs were able to slip in a three-pointer under the second half buzzer to force the extra period. Once there, they held a tenuous lead for nearly half of the five-minute duration, before Billy Johnson was whistled on an untimely foul, sending the Mustangs to the charity stripe where they were effective. WNMU shot 75.0% from the foul line in the contest, including 7-of-9 in the extra frame.

Three Eagles scored in double digits. Sharif Black led the team with a game-high 22 points, adding six rebounds. Johnson had 19 points, three assists, and seven caroms. Warren Gordon pitched in 14 points, with three assists and three boards.

Davante McCallam was the team's leading rebounder, with 10.

Adam Kesler had 19 points to lead the Mustangs. He was 3-of-4 from outside the arc, and made his only two free throws, which provided a dagger with five seconds remaining in overtime. He had six points, and grabbed all three of his rebounds in the deciding five minutes.

Emery Range was 6-of-14 to finish with 17 points for WNMU.

The Eagles return home this Friday, January 22, being well-traveled after their four-game road swing. They host RMAC newcomer Westminster College at approximately 7:30 p.m., and will host Colorado Mesa University the following night at the same time.
