Black Hills State nips Eagles, 77-75

SPEARFISH, S.D — January 9, 2016 — The Chadron State College men's basketball team got its offense back on track Saturday night, making 30 of 61 shots from the field, including 9 of 17 from 3-point territory, but was outscored 19 to 6 from the free throw line and dropped a 77-75 decision to Black Hills State in Spearfish.

The Eagles led most of the game, but Black Hills State tied the score at 70-70 with 1:25 remaining on a 3-pointer by Riley Ryan.

After Chadron State turned the ball over on an offensive foul on the ensuing possession, the Yellow Jackets made seven of eight free throws in the final 52 seconds.

Black Hills State guard Wyatt Krogman made a clutch play when he stole the ball with 10 seconds remaining while it was still a one possession game. The Eagles were forced to foul and Tate Hilgenkamp hit both free throws.

Black Hills is now 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Chadron State is 5-9 and 3-6.

The Eagles, who shot just 29 percent from the field during a 73-56 loss to South Dakota Mines on Friday night, were on target with 49.2 percent of their shots against the Yellow Jackets. They led 41-36 at halftime after Sharif Black nailed a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Chadron State was ahead by as many as nine points in the second half, but Black Hills "hung around" and cashed in on 15 of 18 free throws while the Eagles were just two of three from the line in the second half.

CSC coach Brent Bargen said that for the most part his team played well offensively, but took a couple of "ill-advised, quick shots" near the end of the game. He also commended the Yellow Jackets for "playing good defense without fouling."

Both teams put four players in double figures. Center Davante McCallam led the Eagles with 17 points, one shy of his career-high, on seven of 10 shooting from the field and three-of-three at the free throw line. Warren Gordon added 13 points, Black had 11, and Billy Johnson scored 10 for CSC.

Ryan paced the Yellow Jackets, who were 25 of 56 from the field, including 8 of 22 from long range, with 15 points. Krogman and Pat Mendes each scored 13 and Nick Ongarato 11.
