CHADRON, Neb. -- November 18, 2016 -- Chadron State College men's basketball fell to 0-2 overall in their home opener against the team from Northern State University, who advanced to 2-2 in the early part of the season.
The Eagles at times seemed to take control of the game. However, they gave up a run of 26-4 in the first half, took a brief second half lead, and allowed 17 of 25 second half baskets to let the game slip out of reach. The Eagles went down 94-74.
"Our biggest key tonight was putting pressure on the ball," said CSC head men's basketball coach
Houston Reed. "When we were pressing and getting them out of their offense, they were making mistakes which kept us in the game. When we relaxed, they took control of their own offense. Credit [NSU] coach Sather, because he's been there several years and he's got his guys playing his system, and they're rolling."
Darius Polley opened the game with back-to-back three pointers to open up a 6-0 lead. The Wolves fought back but not long after, Bronte Corbray also fired from three on consecutive trips down the floor to make it 16-11. From there the Eagles went 12:30 with only one field goal, letting the game nearly slip away. CSC lost the turnover battle in the first half, 9-2.
A jumper by
Jordan Perry and a pair of treys by
Warren Gordon kept the Eagles within striking distance at the half, down 44-29. The latter of Gordon's two threes came at the buzzer from just past midcourt.
Chadron State didn't fold. Gordon opened the second half with another three-point ball, giving him three unanswered. The Eagles were accurate in the last 20 minutes, hitting 55.6 percent including 5-of-10 from three, but NSU worked their way back from a 51-50 CSC lead at just under 15 minutes, to come away with a 20-point win.
Four Eagles finished in double digits scoring, with Gordon and Polley tying at 16. Gordon had six assists with only one turnover, while Polley added four assists and chipped in three steals.
Austin Hall led the rebounding with six boards, two of which came on the offensive glass.
Two NSU players, Justin Decker with 23 points and DJ Pollard with 22, went over 20 on the night.
Another home game comes quickly for CSC, as they host Montana State Billings on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
