Both hoops teams at home this weekend

CHADRON, Neb. -- November 24, 2016 -- Both Chadron State College basketball teams will renew the rivalries with the Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday afternoon, but at different locations.  The CSC men will be hosting the Lopers in the Chicoine Center and the CSC women will be playing at Kearney.

The women's game will start at 1 o'clock CT and the men's game at 2 MT.

On Friday prior to the trip to Kearney, the Chadron State women will tangle with Montana State-Billings in the Chicoine Center. That game will start at 1 p.m.

"As soon as we shower, we'll get on the bus and head to Kearney," CSC coach Janet Raymer noted.  "It's a pretty tight schedule."

This weekend's games will be just the second and third for the Lady Eagles.  Their only previous outing was against the University of Wyoming in Laramie on Nov. 11.  The Cowgirls won 74-50 with much of the difference coming in the third period, when they outscored the Eagles 23-7.  Wyoming sank 13 3-pointers for more than half of its points. CSC's Erin Graham was the game's leading scorer with 20 points.

Montana State is 1-4 this season.  The Yellowjackets opened their schedule by playing three games in California.  They lost to California-San Diego 88-60, Cal State San Marcos 77-72 and Point Loma 75-55.

Last weekend, Billing hosted a classic and fell to Northern State of Aberdeen, S.D., 72-67 before defeating Cal Poly Pomona 64-50.

Through the five games, 6-foot senior Tiana Hanson has been the team leader.  She is averaging 16.2 points and 5.6 rebounds.  Junior guard Rylee Kane is next at 11.6 points and 4.0 rebounds while also handing out 6.8 assists a game.

The Chadron State women have played Billings in an early-season game each year since 2009-10. The Eagles won in 2010-11, but the Yellowjackets took the remaining six and lead the all-time series 13-3.

The CSC women resumed their in-state matchup last year after a three-year hiatus following the Lady Lopers' departure from the RMAC at the end of the 2011-12 school year. In 2015, the UNK women won 66-59 in Chadron. The teams split their two games the last time they played home-and-away as conference opponents. UNK leads the all-time rivalry 68-14.

The Kearney women, who finished 16-14 last winter, are 1-5 this season.  They overwhelmed Grace University of Omaha 84-23 on their home court, but lost on the road to Wayne State 69-56, Regis 65-58 and Colorado Christian 75-65 before also being stopped by Northern State 71-45 in Kearney on Monday night.

The Lady Lopers' top scorer so far is Michaela Barry, a 5-6 junior, who is averaging 12 points. They have shot just 34.5 percent from the field while the opponents have hit 46 percent.

The Chadron State and Kearney men's teams have continued to meet once each season since the Lopers left the RMAC.  When the contests have been in Chadron, they have continued to draw the largest crowds of the season, but with most of the students gone from the campus for the Thanksgiving break, that may not be the case on Saturday.

Kearney won last year's game 84-66 on its home court en route to a 21-12 season and leads the all-time series 116-66.

The Lopers are 3-2 after edging Colorado-Colorado Springs 92-91 at home Wednesday night. It was the third straight nail-biter for UNK.

The Lopers opened the season by defeating Southern Arkansas 76-70 and Henderson State, another Arkansas school, 85-66 during a classic in Texas.  After that trip, the Hastings Broncos shaded them 85-83 and Colorado Mines won 73-69, both in Kearney, prior to the one-point win over Colorado Springs.

Trey Lansman, a 6-7 junior, led UNK Wednesday night with 33 points and 10 rebounds to hike his averages to 20.6 and 7.6, respectively.  Kearney also has gotten good production from 6-1 junior Yashua Trent, who has hit 66.7 percent of his field goal shots while averaging 17 points.

The Eagles are 0-3 after Montana State Billings used a 45-28 rebounding bulge as the impetus for an 89-69 decision in Chadron on Tuesday night. The Yellowjackets took 72 field goal shots while CSC managed just 48.
