KEARNEY, Neb. — November 26, 2016 — Thanks to a 20-11 surge in the second period, Chadron State was ahead 29-26 at halftime, but Nebraska-Kearney outscored the Eagles 46-23 the second half to take a 72-52 decision in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon in Kearney.
A pair of junior guards with long-range capabilities led the victory. Michaela Barry scored 19 points and McKenzie Brown 18. Each made seven field goals and Barry was five of 11 from 3-point range and Brown was four of 10. Neither shot a free throw.
Now 2-4 for the season, Kearney had sunk just 24 percent (30-124) of its 3-point tries entering the game, but knocked down 40 percent (12-30) against the Eagles.
Overall, the Lopers shot 44.3 percent from the field, including 58.6 percent in the second half. Chadron State made 34.7 percent of its field goal tries, including six of 14 from afar.
Kearney bolted to a 15-9 first quarter lead, but the Eagles were five of 10 from the field, including three of four from behind the arc, and made seven of eight free throws in the second period to take the halftime lead.
Barry's four treys in the third period helped put the Lopers ahead 49-40 and they led by double digits throughout the fourth quarter.
Kalli Feddersen paced the Eagles with 14 points.
Erin Graham added nine and
Maddie Metzger came off the bench to score eight, all of them in the second period. The Eagles were 12 of 13 from the free throw line.
The Eagles will open their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule this coming weekend by playing at Colorado Mines on Friday and Colorado Christian on Saturday.
