Eagles wrapping up home schedule this weekend

CHADRON, Neb. -- Both Chadron State College basketball teams will be wrapping up their home schedules this weekend when they host the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Friday and Metropolitan State University of Denver on Saturday.  Both twin-bills will start at 5:30 with the women's games.

In addition to the student promos "Pink Out" night on Friday, and "Tacky Tourist" night on Saturday, Blue Key Honor Society will be conducting a canned food drive both nights on the Chicoine Center concourse. Fans are encouraged to support local food pantries by bringing canned goods to the games. Free admission will be given to fans presenting canned goods for donation at the gate.

Seniors on both teams will be honored in pre-game ceremonies prior to each team's game. For the women, those players are Emma Block, Allegria Chisom, and Stephanie Knowles. For the men, Justyn Anderson, Jay Feltson, and Davante McCallam will play their final home game at CSC.

The CSC women, who played most of last weekend's games without two of their three seniors, Block and Knowles, because of injuries, are 7-14 for the season and 7-10 in the RMAC. The CSC men are 6-15 and 4-13.

One of the Eagles' victories was an 83-63 decision in Colorado Springs on Dec. 19, when both Maka Daysh and Erin Graham scored 18 points and the Mountain Lions' top gun, Brittany Hernandez, a 6-foot-1 junior, shot just two of 18 from the field while totaling six points and four rebounds.

Hernandez, the conference's Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year, is averaging 20.6 points, best in the RMAC, and 8.1 rebounds, which is fourth.

Daysh leads the conference rebounders at 9.2 a game and is third in all of NCAA Division II at getting to the free throw line, with 181 attempts. She also leads the conference in double-doubles, with nine.

The Mountain Lion women are 16-7 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

The Metro State women edged the Eagles 61-59 in Denver despite Daysh's 27 points and 15 rebounds.  The Roadrunners are 10-13 for the season and 8-9 in the RMAC, but have won just four of 12 games so far in 2016.  They have four players averaging in double figures in scoring, led by 6-1 sophomore Hannah Stipanovich at 14.3 points. She's also grabbed 6.9 rebounds a game.

Both Colorado Springs (86-63) and Metro State (69-53) defeated the CSC men when the Eagles visited them in December.

The Mountain Lions are 14-10 for the season and 11-6 in the RMAC.  The Roadrunners are 14-9 and 12-5. Both had won five straight games before losing to CSU-Pueblo last weekend.

The Colorado Springs men are led by 6-foot-7 senior Alex Welsh, who is averaging 22.2 points and 9.7 rebounds.  Both figures are second in the RMAC to only Colorado Mesa's 6-10 Ryan Stephan.

Welsh had 24 points and eight rebounds against the Eagles in December. The team is shooting 50 percent from the field this season compared to the Eagles' 40 percent.

Metro State's top scorer is senior guard Tony Dobbinson at 16 points a game and recently tallied 40 against New Mexico Highlands.  Peter Moller, a 6-3 sophomore from Denmark, is next on the list at 11.5.

The Eagles will visit Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction and Westminster in Salt City next weekend before closing the schedule at Regis on Feb. 26.
