SPEARFISH, S.D. -- December 16, 2017 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team held Black Hills State University to its second-lowest point output of the season to date, but couldn't muster enough offense to hang with the Yellow Jackets, as BHSU got a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win, 65-46 on its home court in Spearfish.
Chadron State shot 30.2 percent from the field, and 27.8 from three-point range, while the Yellow Jackets hit 37.7 percent of their shots and 35.0 percent from beyond the arc. As was the case on Friday, points-off-turnovers haunted the Eagles and created a 20-point deficit.
The Yellow Jackets started to separate midway through the second quarter when they went on an 11-0 run, their biggest of the game, on a 4-of-5 shooting streak which included 2-of-3 long balls. They were able to all but lock up the win in the third quarter when they built up as high as a 24-point lead while CSC struggled most offensively. The Eagles hit only 2-of-15 field goals in the third period.
"They're a very aggressive team," said CSC Head Coach
Janet Raymer, "so it's hard to get anything against them. Two of our starters tonight took some hard hits and went out for the game. We were already struggling with Keeley [Pearce] out, and Black HIlls isn't going to give you anything so it was tough."
The Eagles continued their trend of holding down their opponents' best scorer, limiting BHSUÂ guard Rachel Erickson to only two field goals all afternoon, and only allowing her 10 points after she entered the game averaging 14.
However another Black HIlls guard, Remi Wientjes, was 2-of-4 from outside the three-point arc, and 3-for-3 inside it, to wrangle 14 points. The Yellow Jackets' 65 points were distributed among 12 different players.
Allee Williamson was one of the starters mentioned by Coach Raymer who were put out of the contest with an injury. She received a hard hit to the face early in the second quarter, and could miss additional games. Brooke Turek, who started games earlier in the season, also exited with an apparent injury and only recorded seven minutes.
The Eagle women will have a quick turnaround as they prepare for their fifth of seven straight road games, with a jaunt across South Dakota to the University of Sioux Falls up ahead. The Eagles will depart Monday, for the non-conference game Tuesday at 5 p.m. Mountain Time against the 7-2 Cougars.
