CANYON, Texas – February 10, 2017 – Chadron State College freshman pitcher
Jessica Jarecki threw a one-hit shutout against Fort Hays State to start the West Texas Invitational 2-1. The Eagles improved to 3-6 overall as they took down FHSU 1-0, outlasted Missouri Southern State 8-7, and fell 11-2 to Cameron in six innings.
CSC got the one run they needed in the second inning against FHSU, as
Courtney Lecher put up a sac fly to score
Morgan Wilhelm, after Wilhelm doubled with one down in the top of the inning.
Meanwhile, Jarecki carried a perfect game through four innings, giving up her first walk in the fifth and her only hit in the sixth. She finished her only start of the day with three strikeouts and three walks.
In the midday game, CSC survived a seventh-inning scare from Missouri Southern State to win in close fashion. Every CSC batter either hit safely in the game or put the ball into play for an RBI as the Eagle bats finally made a statement in a game.
Senior pitcher
Kinsley Mason got the start and earned her first win of the year, as CSC went up 3-0 in the first inning and never trailed.
That lead was in jeopardy in the sixth inning, as the Lions put across three to close within 6-5 and had bases loaded.
Megan Horn entered and got a strikeout before
Taylor Bauer stopped a rally with a clutch assist to home plate. Horn was able to end the inning on the next at bat.
The Eagles gave themselves some room with two more runs in the seventh, then the Lions went back on offense trailing 8-5. They put two on base quickly, before
Dallas Magnusson entered the circle. She was able to hold the Lions' to two runs in the inning to preserve the win and get the save.
Courtney Lecher was 4-for-5 at the plate against MSSU.
Lindsey Karlin went 2-for-3 with two walks and the go-ahead RBI.
Morgan Wilhelm was good for a team-high two RBI – one each in the third and fourth innings.
CSC did not fare as well in the mid-afternoon game against Cameron. Lecher and sophomore
Kayla Michel took turns hitting two leadoff doubles apiece over the first four innings, yet the Eagles were only able to convert two runs.
Meanwhile the Aggies steadily built a nine-run lead over six innings, and the game was called at that point due to runs.
Chadron State faces Washburn on Saturday at 9 a.m. MT. The Ichabods went 0-3 on Friday but the first was a 2-1 loss to Cameron and the other two were both run-rule losses to No. 4 West Texas A&M. The Eagles play WTAMU to conclude their weekend at 11 a.m.
