SPEARFISH, S.D. -- Chadron State College throwers tuned up for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships by pretty well dominating their events at Black Hills State's Stinger Meet on Saturday. The conference showdown also will be at the same location this weekend.
As anticipated, senior
Mel Herl of Eaton, Colo., swept her events. Younger teammates continued to make progress as well.
Herl won the shot put with a career-best of 49-feet, ¼-inch and also remained unbeaten in the 20-pound weight throw at 70-4 ¼.
Two CSC freshmen also placed among the top five in the shot.
Danielle Weyer of Fremont was third at 38-6 ¼, her best by 16 inches, and
Ashton Hallsted of Casper was fifth at 37- ¼.
Eagles swept the top four spots in the weight throw.Â
Ashlyn Hanson of Seward was the runner-up to Herl with a toss of 55-5 ¾, Hallsted was third at 53-4 ½, her best by more than 3 ½ feet, and
Keri Ruff, also of Eaton, Colo., was fourth at 53- 1 ½.
Chadron State entries claimed the top three places in the men's weight throw. Sophomore
Cory Martens of Newton, Kan., was the winner at 57-5 ¾, his career-best by 2 ½ feet;
Blake Jacobs of Littleton, Colo., was second at 56-6 ½, his best by eight inches; and
Jesse Bleidt of Lewellen was third at 55-11 ½.
In addition,
David Aldridge of Elkhorn placed fifth at 51-¼ and
Frantzlee LaCrete, also of Lewellen, was sixth at 50-2.
Alex Weis of Southwest Minnesota State won the shot put with a toss of 52-8, but Eagles took the next three places. Martens was the runner-up at 52-2, Jacobs was third at 51-4 ¼ and Aldridge was fourth at 51-1 ¾.
Also on Saturday, two Eagles entered the Joe Davies Meet at Colorado Mines.Â
Andre Woodson of Elk Grove, Calif., had the fastest time of 6.91 seconds in the 60 meters, but false started in the finals. Maddie Brashears of Fort Morgan, Colo., was sixth in the long jump at 18-1 ½.
