Three more RMAC champs on third day of meet

GUNNISON, Colo. -- May 10, 2017 --
Chadron State College captured three more individual titles at the 2017 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Tuesday, bringing the school's total in the three-day meet to six conference champions.

Headlining the day was once again senior thrower Mel Herl, whose wins in the discus throw and the shot put both came by wide margins. Her discus went 61.98 meters (170-06) to set a new RMAC Championships record by over seven feet. The throw distanced her from her nearest competitor, Janell Fullerton of New Mexico Highlands University, by a nearly 17-foot margin. Since the discus was postponed from Monday, Herl then went directly into shot put competition, where she set another RMAC meet record with a toss of 16.33 meters. That mark, which set her apart from the field by a full meter, was not only a personal best and school record, but also planted Herl among the top 10 NCAA Division II outdoor shot put performers of all time.

Chadron State's men also produced a title winner, as senior triple jumper Dez Smith, of Bellflower, California, leapt 14.22 meters (46-08), passing 18 other competitors for the gold. Smith put forth his best effort of the season to win the event by 2.75 inches over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs' William Ross, the RMAC indoor champ.

Also on Tuesday, CSC senior distance runner Alejandro Garcia was announced as the RMAC Summit Award winner for the fourth time of his career. The Summit Award is presented to the sophomore or above, competing in the championship meet, with the highest cumulative grade point average. Garcia, who carries a perfect 4.00 GPA, previously garnered Summit Awards at the RMAC 2016 indoor track and field, 2016 outdoor, and 2016 cross country championships.

Besides Herl's throws, three other school records fell on the final day of the meet.

Stachia Reuwsat chipped 0.03 seconds off of her own best time in the 100 meter dash to finish third in 11.62 seconds. She will almost certainly compete in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Bradenton, Florida.

Tessa Gorsuch edged Shelby Bozner's 100 meter hurdles record of 13.91 seconds, running the hurdles in 13.87. The new mark is good for the 21st time nationally this season, after an altitude adjustment, and has Gorsuch teetering on the brink of NCAA Championships acceptance.

Also, the women's 4x100 relay team of Sierra Martinez, Gorsuch, Chasidy Horton, and Reuwsaat, moved up to fifth in the nation with a new school record of 45.46 seconds. Reuwsaat is the only member of the 2016 squad which held the old record.

A slew of third-place finishers rounded out the Eagles' podium appearances.

Reuwsaat went 24.97 to set a personal best in her first attempt at the 200 meters since the 2015 RMAC meet.

Haley Gallagher earned bronze twice - in the women's high jump and pole vault. She tied her personal best in the high jump at 1.63 meters (5-04.25), and had an outdoor personal best in the pole vault with a mark of 3.38 meters (11-01).

The women's 4x400 relay team of Alisha Heelan, Cassidy Johnson, Horton, and Martinez, was the third best in their swift section of the finals on Tuesday. They finished in 3:49.30.

On the men's side, Alejandro Garcia and Blake Jacobs were the only other competitors on Tuesday to land on the podium for their events.

Garcia took third in the 5,000 meter run, keeping pace with defending national champ Sidney Gidabuday, of Adams State, for about 11 laps, before the seven-time All-American sophomore gained four seconds on him in the final trip around. Garcia was 31st in the event, entering the RMAC Championships, and did not advance in the national rankings.

Jacobs placed third in the shot put with a new personal best of 16.77 meters (55-00.25) to lead the Eagles. His provisional qualifying toss puts him 25th on the national lists, which may require a slight improvement in the final week of competition to earn a spot at nationals. The 2016 outdoor shot put field was 20 deep.

Other PR performances came from Heelan in the 400 meters (56.86), Tory Snyder in the women's pole vault (3.38 meters; 11-01), Gorsuch in the triple jump (1148 meters; 36-08.50), Ashlyn Hanson in the discus throw (41.88 meters; 137-05).

Erin Graham recorded a fifth-place finish in the women's triple jump (11.49 meters; 37-08.50), in her first-ever collegiate competition, and Jack Gibbens landed eighth in the men's 400 meter hurdles (58.45), in his first-ever try.

The Chadron State women placed third as a team with 127 total points, just behind second-place host Western State with 133, and ahead of New Mexico Highlands with 120. CSC's men, with 79 points, were a distant fourth behind the leaders.

Adams State won the team honors for the women, carrying the week with 147 points, while Western State took the men's team trophy with 150.5 points.
