KEARNEY, Neb. -- January 13, 2018 -- The Chadron State College wrestling team defeated Northern State University 31-18 in their first dual meet on Saturday, but lost 24-14 to Newman University in the mid-morning, and then fell 27-9 to Fort Hays State in the afternoon.

Chance Karst (133 pounds), Brock Thumm (141), Jacob Otuafi (157), and Heber Shepherd (174) each went 2-1 in the three dual meets. Heavyweight Rulon Taylor and 165-pounder Johnny Porter each went 1-1, with Porter taking a forfeit for six team points in the Northern State dual. Chase Clasen and Jacob DeSersa each went 1-0 at 149 pounds.

CSC gave up six points in each match at 197 pounds.

Karst and Otuafi were the high scorers for the Eagles with 10 points and nine, respectively. Each wrestler had one pin, along with Rulon Taylor, with a first-period win by fall versus Northern.

Thumm scored a major decision with seven points, and Shepherd matched Taylor's six with two wins by decision.

In the win over Northern, the Eagles used the same lineup as their Thursday dual at home against Colorado Mines, but made adjustments to their lineup at 149 pounds and heavyweight as the day progressed. 

Chadron State has 11 days to prepare for a home dual meet with New Mexico Highlands, on Wednesday, January 24, at 6 p.m. Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night is set for that evening.
