Both women and men second at CSC Cross Country Open

CHADRON, Neb. -- October 3, 2020 -- Both the Chadron State College cross country teams finished behind South Dakota Mines in head-to-head duals with their conference rivals on Saturday morning as CSC hosted its ninth annual open meet.

The men's team, which raced first, lost the team points total 40 to 20, while the women fell by a closer margin of 31 to 24.

Eagles finished as individual runners-up in each race. For the men it was Jesse Jaramillo finishing the eight-kilometer course in 26:30.35, improving his personal best by 42 seconds. True freshman Tukker Romey was second for the women in 20:09.26, running the 5k nearly two minutes faster than she did two weeks ago in Colorado Springs.

Both Noah Burtis, on the men's team, and Sydney Settles, on the women's, had collegiate best times in their respective distances. Burtis crossed in 27:21.79, taking four seconds off his performance at Fort Hays State last season. Settles beat her former fast time, from the same meet, by eight and a half seconds with a time of 20:47.71.

The Hardrocker men scored 20 to upend the Eagles, who totaled 40, on their home course. South Dakota Mines' women won 24 to 31.

Chadron State will have three weeks to train for its final race, the 2020 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs. The top 40 percent of teams finishing at that meet will be invited to attend a Division II cross country national invitational meet in Lubbock, Texas. The invitational serves to replace the NCAA Championships this season.
