SPEARFISH, S.D. -- January 30, 2021 -- Chadron State College athletes won six events Saturday at the Dave Little Alumni Indoor Track and Field Meet at Black Hills State in Spearfish.
While the Eagles were without several of their leaders, Coach
Riley Northrup said he was pleased with many of the results posted by his young team. A majority of the placewinners are freshmen or sophomores. Athletes from eight schools competed.
The CSC men's event winners included freshman
Morgan Fawver of McCook, who shared top honors in the 60-meter dash with a Dickinson State entry in 6.92 seconds. Fawver also was the runner-up in the long jump at 22-feet, 11 inches.
Elsewhere on the track,
Harley Rhoades of Douglas, Wyo., was second in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 51.82 seconds. Greg Logsdon of Yoder, Wyo., was a close third in 52.32.
Two CSC freshmen,
Cale Schafer of LaSalle, Colo., and
Ethan Roberts of Rapid City were third and fourth among the 13 contestants in the 3000 meters.
The Eagles also won four men's field events.Â
Shane Collins of Bison, S.D., won the shot put at 50-8,
Naishaun Jernigan of Springfield, Mass., won the long jump at 23-3 ¼;
Joss Linse of Plattsmouth, Neb., was the triple jump winner at 45-11 ¼; and Joe Dumsa of Sandy, Utah, claimed the high jump by clearing 6-4 ¼.
CSC's
Derrick Nwagwu of Aurora, Colo., was second to Linse in the triple jump by going 45-6 ¼.
Pete Brown of Oxford, Neb., was fourth in both the 60-meter hurdles and pole vault.
Lady Eagles' highlights included a tie for first in the high jump by freshmen
Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., and
Destiny Pelton of Fort Morgan, Colo., at 5-3 ¼.
Miranda Gilkey of Lusk, Wyo., was third in the high jump and also was second in the triple jump, a new event for her, at 34-4 ¾. Cerenil was third in the latter event.
Another freshman,
Morgan Ekwall of Yoder, Wyo., was fourth in the women's shot put.
Courtney Smith of Rock Springs, Wyo., was fifth in both the shot and weight throw.
The Eagles will host meets each of the next two Saturdays in February in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.Â
