Women’s basketball falls to Javelinas in season opener

KINGSVILLE, Texas -- November 12, 2021 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team (0-1, 0-0) was defeated 58-51 in their season opener on Friday by Lone Star Conference member Texas A&M-Kingsville (1-0, 0-0) in Kingsville, Texas.

In their first non-conference game since February of the 2019-20 season, the Eagles jumped ahead with a 13-6 first quarter lead. They shot 40% on field goals (6-15) and 33.33% on three-pointers (1-3). Guard Jori Peters was the Eagle to land the quarter's only three-pointer between the two teams.

The Javelinas bounced back from their slow start to score 17 points in the second quarter, three more than the Eagles' 14. CSC shot 28.57% (4-14) of their field goals compared to Kingsville's percentage of 35.71% (5-14). With three-pointers made by guard Samiyah Worrell and forward Ashayla Powers, the Eagles entered halftime with a 27-23 lead.

The third quarter was a completely different story than the first half. The Eagles were unable to get anything going offensively, going 0-12 on field goals and 0-6 on three-pointers. The Javelinas took advantage, scoring 20 unanswered points in the quarter off the efforts of Kingsville's Mia Rivers and Jayde Tschritter, who combined for 12 points.

The Eagles got their groove back in the fourth quarter by scoring a game-high 24 points. The team shot 60% on field goals (9-15), 40% on three-pointers (2-5), and 100% on free throws (4-4). Despite improved play across the board, Kingsville did just enough on offense to maintain the lead over CSC for the quarter, winning the game 58-51.

Worrell and Powers, players who did not start Friday's game, were statistical leaders for the Eagles. Worrell shot 33.33% on three-pointers (2-6) and had two steals while Powers lead the team in field goals (5-9), free throws (3-5), total points (14) offensive rebounds (3), and defensive rebounds (7).

"We played three decent quarters of basketball," said Head Basketball Coach Janet Raymer. "We have a lot of new pieces this year and we are still trying to figure out where everyone fits."

Chadron State will travel two hours to Laredo, Texas Saturday to face the Texas A&M International Dustdevils (0-0, 0-0).
