Women's Wrestling Hosts Dickinson, Heads to Kansas

CHADRON, Neb. – With one competition down, the Chadron State women's wrestling team begins their schedule in earnest this week, competing in a home dual on Thursday night before traveling to Kansas for another open.

The Eagles will battle Dickinson State, the No. 19-ranked NAIA team in the country, in a Thursday night dual set to start at 6 p.m. in the Chicoine Center. Two days later, the Eagles will take a partial squad to the Dust Bowls Open hosted by Colby Community College in Kansas.

Thursday's dual will be live streamed on the RMAC Network. Live results are available for both on Track Wrestling/Flo Wrestling.

Looking Back
Chadron State received a fourth-place finish from Brianna Vollendroff at 103 pounds while seven of 10 competing Eagle wrestlers won multiple matches at the Battle of the Rockies, hosted by the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana.

RECAP: Battle of the Rockies

Redshirt freshman Adrianna Lopez and Fort Hays State transfer Piper Cadden, who were each making their CSC competitive debuts, led the charge with three wins each. Cadden, an NCAA national qualifier last season, won her first three matches to advance to the semifinals before falling to two of the top three seeds in the tournament, while Lopez opened her collegiate career by losing her first bout but charging through the consolation bracket, winning three straight.

Dual Threat?
Chadron State performed better as a tournament team than a dual team last season.

The Eagles had a 1-6 dual record, including an 0-4 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals, but finished in third place at the RMAC Championships, which are based on tournament scoring. CSC also excelled at the regional and national tournaments, with four top-four regional finishers earning a national qualifying spot and two student-athletes making the top 12 at nationals.

Chadron State's first test of their 2025-26 dual strength will come against Dickinson State, a formidable program in the NAIA ranks which features three Top 10 nationally ranked NAIA wrestlers. This is the first meeting between the two schools, as a scheduled match last year fell through and was postponed.

The Blue Hawks feature the NAIA's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 131 pounds, Jumoke Adekoye, who defeated CSC's Piper Cadden last weekend at the Battle of the Rockies. Cadden is not scheduled to compete in either of this week's competitions after picking up a minor injury in Montana.

Dickinson State also boasts the No. 7 NAIA wrestler at 117 pounds in Larhae Whaley and the No. 10 NAIA wrestler at 110 pounds in Jenna Gerhardt, who defeated Rylee Balcazar. Those two will likely rematch Thursday. Desza Munson and Maria Arellano defeated Dickinson State opponents last weekend.

National Rankings
Three Chadron State women's wrestlers have earned spots in the preseason national rankings, released by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), while the Eagles have cracked the top 10 of the preseason national rankings for the first time.

Rylee Balcazar (ranked No. 9 at 110 pounds), Piper Cadden (No. 6 at 131 pounds) and returning All-American Esther Peters (No. 5 at 207 pounds) were all mentioned in the preseason rankings, which list the top 10 athletes nationally at each of the sport's 10 weight classes.

Based on their rankings, Balcazar, Cadden and Peters earn two, six and seven points respectively towards CSC's team total, which determines the team rankings total. With 15 points, the Eagles are in a four-way tie for the No. 10 spot.

Cadden and Peters are not scheduled to compete this weekend while they recover from minor injuries.
