RAPID CITY, S.D. – Chadron State won eight events during the Bauer Open track meet, hosted by South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Friday, on a day in which different Eagles had different priorities.
The meet was designed to help the Eagles as well as the host Hardrockers and the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets prepare for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Championships that will be this coming weekend at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
Head coach
Jake Gruver explained that some Chadron athletes comfortably in the conference's top 24 placings that qualify for next week's championships didn't make the trip, while some took the opportunity to have another chance to compete. Others who entered either outside the qualification places or on the bubble were trying to improve their marks to be among the lucky 24 in their event.
Chadron State's eight event winners included two victories from sophomore
Chayton Bynes, who has the RMAC's best triple jump mark of 50 feet, 11 ¾ inches, and is among the leaders in the long jump at 23-10 ½.
"Everything went really well for Chayton today," Gruver said. "He took just three jumps in each event and jumped well (49-1 ½ and 22-1 ¼). This was a good primer for him today, helping him regain his confidence."
Among the Eagles who did not compete Friday was freshman
Trace Hanchett, who the previous week threw the javelin 215-3 to set the Chadron State record and take the RMAC lead. Also skipping the meet was senior
Creighton Trembly, who will be in contention to be on the podium in the hurdles at the RMAC meet based on his extensive track record.
Those wanting to tune up one more time before the RMAC showdown included senior
Parker Gonser in the hammer throw. It was mission accomplished for Gonser, who won the 12-man competition with a career-best mark of 185-8. He was seventh on the conference's pre-meet chart.
The 4x100 relay team, which won the event with a time of 41.29 seconds, had the chance to practice their exchanges before the conference meet. Three of the four relay runners skipped the individual sprints because their times are high on the RMAC list. The exception was freshman
Dylan Sup, who placed second in the 200 in 22.23 and will hope that the mark will qualify him for the conference race.
Four CSC distance runners braved temperatures in the low 50s to run the 3000-meter steeplechase for the first time this season. Junior
Blaine Johnson, who won the race with a time of 10:27.18 that should qualify him for the RMAC Meet.
Three Chadron State women won events. Senior
Shantae Morgan captured the crown in the 100-meter dash while
Alissa Wieman won the 1500 with a season-best time of 4:41.29. Freshman
Camila Salvucci won the triple jump with a leap of 38-10 ½ that is just three inches shy of her season-best, which is among the top five in the conference.
