CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team (0-2) outrebounded the visiting team from Montana State University Billings (2-4) Friday afternoon, but the Yellowjackets took advantage of greater attempts at both the three point and the foul line to escape with a 66-60 win over the Eagles.
"We did some good things tonight," said CSC head women's basketball coach
Janet Raymer. "We moved the ball pretty well, but we had our lapses. We took some shots that weren't great shots for our team. We worked hard and got better as the game went on, which kept us in it."
Chadron State won the first and fourth quarters, but were tripped up by a second quarter where they went 3-for-16 from the field, scoring only seven points. The opponents, meanwhile, had six of their 16 total points from the free throw line in that same period.
Despite the cold shooting, CSC went into halftime down only six points, trailing 31-25.
The Yellowjackets had their best quarter in the third, where they hit 8-of-14 from the floor, pushing their lead out to 10 points.
However, post players
Kylah Collins, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and
Kendra Baucom, who finished with 13 points, scored 12 of their combined 29 in the fourth quarter to close the final score to a six-point margin.
Wing player
Kalli Feddersen added nine points and led the team with 13 rebounds and four assists.
Billings players Taylor Edwards and Tiana Hanson each had 16 points.
"We did some different things defensively," said Raymer. "It was against the aggressive version of our zone in the first quarter, where we left a lot of threes open because we didn't rotate. They stopped hitting them in the second quarter, but we still had our defense off because you have the wrong player trying to cover it. In the fourth quarter we actually went man-to-man because of some size matchups, and held them to their lowest-scoring quarter. I was actually happy with what we were able to do with that, so hopefully we can implement that a little more than I had anticipated this season."
The Eagles make a short trip down to Kearney tomorrow, where they will play the 1-4 Lopers in an in-state rivalry matchup. Tip-off is at noon MT, or 1 p.m. local time.
Senior guard Alexa Hogberg led the Lopers with 21 points last season in Chadron, while junior forward Imani Kyser added 16. So far this season, the pair have combined to average 9.3 points per game on 29.6 percent shooting.
"The biggest thing at Kearney is controlling the tempo," said Raymer. "They have a deep bench - much deeper than ours - and so we don't want to get into a running match. They haven't shot the ball that well so far, so hopefully that's our advantage."
