Eagles at home for twin-bills this weekend

CHADRON, Neb. -- December 8, 2016 -- Both Chadron State College basketball teams will be at home this weekend to play Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference double-headers against Colorado-Colorado Springs on Friday night and Metro State of Denver on Saturday night.  The action will start at 5:30 with the women's games.

All four of the teams that will visit opened their conference schedules at home last weekend by sweeping Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines.

The Chadron State women are coming off their first victory of the season, a 69-64 decision over Colorado Christian on the road last Saturday night.  Three team members, Erin Graham, Kylah Collins and Kalli Feddersen, are averaging between 10.8 and 12.2 points through five games.

The CSC men are still searching for their first victory. Guards Darius Polley and Warren Gordon are averaging 14.7 and 14.3 points, respectively.  Freshman center Michael Johnson leads the RMAC in field goal shooting after making 20 of 26 attempts for a 77 percent figure.

The Colorado Springs women are now 5-3 for the season.  They are led by 6-foot-1 senior Brittany Hernandez, last year's RMAC Player of the Year and the preseason choice by the coaches for that honor again this winter.

Hernandez scored 21 points during the Mountain Lions' 77-53 win over Black Hills State and 29 in the 81-72 victory over South Dakota Mines. Previously, she had not scored that much, and is averaging 14.8 points and 6.8 rebounds. Jen Vigil, a 5-5 senior, has scored 21 points twice and has hit 21 of 51 of her 3-point shots this season.

The Colorado Springs men lost four of their five non-conference games, including a 92-91 verdict at Nebraska-Kearney, but have now won three in a row.  They beat Black Hills 78-57 and edged Mines 66-64 last weekend.  Their top scorer is 6-5 senior TreShawn Wilford at 12.3 points a game. He got 32 against Kearney.

The Metro women are 6-3 after besting South Dakota Mines 66-47 and Black Hills 66-52. They have three players averaging about 13 points with 6-footer Georgia Ohrdorf setting the pace at 13.4 a game.  J'Nae Squires, a 5-8 guard, is average 9.8 points and has sunk 22 of her teams' 45 3-point shots this season.

The Roadrunners' men are 6-2 after stopping the Mines Hardrockers 73-54 and the Black Hills Yellow Jackets 67-40. They are known for their tough defense, but also have four players averaging at least 11.8 points. The pacesetter is Omaha native Cameron Williams, a 6-1 junior who is averaging 15.3.

The Eagles will conclude their pre-Christmas schedule by playing at South Dakota Mines and Black Hills on Dec. 16 and 17.
