GOLDEN, Colo. -- May 14, 2017 -- Chadron State College track and field athletes
Alejandro Garcia and
Tessa Gorsuch each ran lifetime personal bests in Golden, Colorado, on Sunday in the men's 1,500 meter run, and the women's 100 meter hurdles, respectively, to secure spots at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Garcia celebrated his 23rd birthday by leaping to 10th nationally, and Gorsuch went to 18th on the final possible day of the season before declarations are due on Monday morning.
Garcia, who entered the weekend in 34th on the national lists, ran the 1,500 meters in 3:52.50 at altitude, which officially converts to 3:46.26, more than a three-second improvement from his time earlier in the week at the RMAC Championships.
Gorsuch's official time of 13.93 seconds on Friday in Golden was good enough for 21st at the time of the meet, but was overtaken by several others over the weekend. Fortunately, she was able to leave that mark in the dust on Sunday, running 13.78 to officially register a 13.82 by NCAA standards.
Also competing in Golden on Sunday, senior long jumper
Stachia Reuwsaat, who had already auto-qualified for NCAAs and led the nation in the long jump, posted a mark of 6.54 meters (21-05.50) which stands as a new Stermole Track and Field Complex facility record, breaking her own mark of 6.39 meters set last year.
The full official NCAA accepted list is to be released Tuesday, May 16, by 4 p.m. MT.
