BRADENTON, Florida -- May, 27, 2017 -- Chadron State College had three more All-America certificates etched out on the third day of NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships competition in Bradenton Florida. Leading the way once again was senior
Mel Herl in the shot put, followed later in the afternoon by
Alejandro Garcia in the 1,500 meters, and Stachia Reuwsaat in the 100 meters.
The Chadron State women finished up sixth in the team standings. Herl's second place finish in the shot put and Reuwsaat's sixth place in the 100 meter dash added 11 points to the team's total of 29 points for the meet.
The Eagle men's team was unable to record a top-eight finish in its two events, and finishes without scoring team points.
Herl went head-to-head with the next-best thrower in her event during the regular season. Michaela Dendinger, of Wayne State College hit a personal best of 16.69 meters (54-9 ¼) on her very first attempt, which stood as her top mark throughout the event. Herl hit 16.15 meters (53-0) on her second attempt to put the two Nebraska collegians in the front seats. As was the case during the regular season, no other thrower hit the 16-meter mark during the remaining rounds, and they finished in the same order. Herl's second-place finish was good for eight team points.
In the men's 1,500 meters, Garcia faced a field of familiar faces, as all eight from his preliminary section qualified to make the 12-man finals. Additionally, three of those eight were RMAC runners, two of whom he faced in Gunnison just three weeks earlier, when he finished fifth. Garcia ran in the middle of the pack through the first half of the race, and finished 12th in 3:56.76. The USTFCCCA will recognize him officially as a Second Team All-American, under guidelines established prior to the 2015-16 season. He is CSC's first male distance runner to earn the distinction.
Reuwsaat finished up with her eighth career First Team All-America honor, coming in sixth in the 100 meter dash in 11.74 seconds to secure three team points. She was in the lane next to Adams State's Dianna Johnson, who blitzed to a new facility record 11.40 seconds to become the NCAA champ. Reuwsaat's eight All-America credentials are the most by any CSC track and field athlete, male or female.
West Texas A&M took the women's team title with 64 points, ahead of runner-up Grand Valley State. Adams State was third. On the men's side, it was St. Augustine's leading Lincoln 58 to 52 for the title, and Ashland and Tiffin tied for third at 50 points apiece.
