CSC golfers improve to finish fourth in Phoenix

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Chadron State College golfers improved their play on Tuesday at the SMSU Invitational at Wigwam Golf Resort near Phoenix, resulting in a team score of 333-321-654, which elevated them one spot to pass Nebraska-Kearney for fourth place in the event.

"Our mindset going into round two was much better," said CSC Head Golf Coach John Ritzen. "Our attitudes were good, and we didn't get down on ourselves for playing a bad hole. This was a great spring opener, and I'm excited to watch them build on this experience."

Making the biggest move up the leaderboard on Tuesday was sophomore Alpine Hickstein. Her score of 75 was a 15-stroke improvement over Monday, and one off her career low. She finished tied for 21st showing 90-75-165.

Freshman Brooke Kramer also leapt into the 21st spot individually, dropping seven strokes on Tuesday. She carded 86-79-165.

Freshman Kenzey Kanno held the highest ranking on the team at the conclusion of the tournament. After leading the team on Monday with a 79, she came back and added an 84 to finish at 163 for a 14th-place tie.

Another pair of freshman settled in near the middle of the 53-woman tourney. Kinsey Smith shot 83-83-166 for 24th, while Allison Acosta fired 85-84-169 for 26th.

Kramer and teammate Jordan Grasis, who competed only as an individual golfer, tied for the third-most birdies in the field. In addition, Kramer was fourth in par-four scoring.

Westminster College won the team title at 308-304-612, while their top golfer, freshman Whitney Banz, won individual honors, scoring 71-74-145. The Griffins took three of the top five places on the individual leaderboard.

Chadron State will next compete in Pueblo, Colorado, on March 21-22, at Walking Stick Golf Course.
