SPEARFISH, S.D. -- Chadron State College's
Daniel Reynolds got his track and field season off to a great start Saturday.
Competing at Black Hills State's Yellow Jacket Holiday Open Meet, Reynolds threw the 35-pound weight 20.51 meters, which is 67 feet, 3 ½ inches, or two feet and four inches farther than his previous best of 64-11 ½.  His old mark was the Chadron State record and is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's record. Reynolds set those records last year while at the conference meet.
The conference record that Reynolds broke a year ago dated back to 2002. His throw Saturday is expected to qualify him for the National Indoor Championships this coming February.
Reynolds also won the shot put at the Yellow Jacket Meet with a mark of 50-10 ¾. He's a junior from Granby, Colo. He also set Chadron State's hammer throw record last spring.
The Eagles' other outstanding male thrower,
Shane Collins, is expected to miss the 2023 indoor season while rehabilitating a shoulder injury, but he plans to be ready for the outdoors schedule.
Besides Reynolds, Chadron State had three other double winners Saturday. Among them was
Kyla Sawvell, who swept the women's shot put and weight throw events. Although this is her final year of collegiate eligibility, it was her first meet while wearing an Eagles' uniform.
Previously, Sawvell was a standout for the Black Hills State, where her exploits included winning 10 throwing championships at RMAC meets. She switched to Chadron State this fall because it has a graduate program in exerise science. Her winning marks Saturday were 46-10 in the shot and 61-3 in the hammer. They rank ninth and fifth best on CSC's all-time lists.
Another double winner was
Carlie Collier of Dunning in the 60 and 200 meters. She ran the 60 in 7.82 seconds, seventh best all-time at CSC, and her 200 time of 25.68 seconds is fifth.
The third Chadron State woman to win two events Saturday is freshman
Megan Baloun, a 2022 graduate of Stevens High School in Rapid City. She won the long and triple jumps.Â
Other Eagles who were event winners are
Kassyl Swinney of Gordon in the 400,
Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., in the high jump and
Madison Clause, a freshman from Billings, Mont., in the pole vault.
Five Chadron State men besides Reynolds won events Saturday. They are Nigeria native
Quincy Efeturi, 200; freshman
Kyland Fuller of Fort Laramie, Wyo., 800;
Creighton Trembly of Longmont, Colo., 60 hurdles;
Emory Yoosook of Casper, long jump; and freshman
James Bruner of Scottsbluff, high jump.Â
CSC's 4x400 relay comprised of
Osvaldo Cano,
Cameryn Spence,
Harley Rhoades and
Logan Peila won that event.
The Eagles will not be back in action again until they return to Black Hills State on Jan. 14. Besides CSC and Black HIlls, the South Dakota Mines team and a partial squad from Rocky Mountain College competed Saturady. It was CSC's first meet after Seth Mischke became the head coach in August.
