SHERIDAN, Wyo. – After placing se
cond in breakaway roping at the Central Wyoming College rodeo the previous weekend, Chadron State senior
Brooke McCully of Mullen was first in the event at the Sheridan College rodeo this past weekend.
Riding her gray gelding Tom, McCully caught her calves at Sheridan in 3.4 and 3.5 se
conds. She was se
cond in the long go-round, made up of all 100 or so of the breakaway ropers, and had the fastest time in the finals on Sunday, when the top 10 from the previous action had their showdown.
Another Chadron State senior also did well again last weekend.
Jake Chasek of Mitchell placed fourth in tie down roping, giving him a top four placing at all three rodeos in the Central Rocky Mountain Region so far this fall. Previously, Chasek was se
cond at the CSC rodeo and third at Central Wyoming.
Chasek's times at Sheridan were 12.2 se
conds and 21.8 se
conds, good for fourth place in both go-rounds. The latter time isn't something a roper will brag about, but CSC Rodeo Coach Lane Day said the calf was big and not cooperative when Chasek tried to take it down and tie it.
"It took a real cowboy to get the job done," Day said, noting that six of the 10 tie down ropers didn't have a mark in the finals. Among them was CSC junior
Sid Miller of Merna, who won the tie down title at the Chadron State rodeo and was fourth at Central Wyoming, but missed
connections Sunday at Sheridan.
Two more CSC cowboys,
Cinch Kiger of Overton and
Tanner Olson of Gordon, tied for third and fourth in bareback riding at Sheridan. Both finished with 130 points while riding their two broncs the required eight se
conds.
CSC freshman
Mejrusa Rustemovic of Kiowa, Colorado was among the 10 finalists in barrel racing at Sheridan after finishing her first run in 17.68 se
conds to share third place with two other
contestants. Day said she had bad luck in the finals, when her gray mare lost a shoe and fell as they rounded one of the barrels.
The next rodeo in the region will be October 11-13 at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne.
