Kleve Wins Medalist Honors in Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. – Macy Kleve shot 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday, the best score of the day in the entire field, to win outright individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 6-over-par 150 at the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational, hosted by Montana State Billings at Lake Hills Golf Course.

After carding a 77 during Monday's opening round, which had the true freshman from Windsor, Colorado in a four-way tie for third place and one stroke behind two co-leaders entering Tuesday, Kleve turned in a sparkling round of 15 pars, two bogeys (on No. 6 and No. 12) and one birdie (on No. 3). Kleve's excellence also helped Chadron State secure fourth place out of 11 in the team standings.

Kleve's two-day score of 150 is tied for the second-lowest 36-hole score in Chadron State women's golf program history, matching Alpine Hickstein's 150 at the El Cheapo Classic during the 2020-21 season and five strokes behind Jordan Grasis's program-record 145 during the fall 2023 season.

In addition, the 73 that Kleve shot during Tuesday's action is tied for the fourth-lowest single round in program history, trailing a 70 by Hickstein and a 71 by Grasis during the same respective tournaments. Klara Kleinig also shot a round of 71 during her true freshman season last year.

Finally, Kleve's individual victory is the first for the Chadron State program since Grasis took down the Hardrocker Spring Invite in Rapid City on April 11, 2024, a tournament in which CSC also won the team title.

As she emerged as the leader, Kleve calmly nailed par on eight of her final nine holes of the day (holes 7-15 after a shotgun start on hole 16) to stay one stroke ahead of the second-place finisher, Orraya Jan Tipasathien of Montana State Billings, at 7-over 151. Rocky Mountain College teammates Grace Metcalf and Kirsten Smith tied for third at 10-over 154.

During the tournament, Kleve shot even-par on the course's par 3's, a tournament-best 5-over-par on the course's par 4's and just 1-over-par on all par 5's. Kleve poured in 28 pars out of 36 holes in the tournament, three more than anyone else in the 61-golfer field.

Rocky Mountain won the team title with a cumulative score of 50-over 626, taking it down by five strokes over tournament hosts Montana State Billings. Seattle Pacific finished third at 62-over 638, with Chadron State 12 strokes back of the third-place Falcons at 74-over 650.

The Eagles edged out the Montana State Billings "B" team by three strokes while South Dakota Mines followed in sixth, 10 strokes behind the Eagles. Chadron State had a 24-stroke cushion to seventh-place University of Mary, with Black Hills State, Central Wyoming College, Columbia Basin CC and Spokane CC further down the leaderboard.

Behind Kleve, Klara Kleinig had a solid tournament to help the Eagles in the team standings. After a round one 79, Kleinig carded an 11-over-par 83 on Tuesday, sealing a solo 13th-place finish at 18-over 162.

Lauren Knapp, the second freshman alongside Kleve in Chadron State's scoring five, finished in 32nd place at 25-over 169, shooting 16-over 88 on Tuesday. Senior Payton Wise finished tied for 41st at 31-over 175 and carded an 89 in round two.

Sophomore Allison Sanger finished tied for 46th place overall, but matched Kleinig for CSC's second-best round of the day by shooting 11-over 83 on Tuesday, taking some of the sting out of an opening-round 94. Sanger hit back-to-back made birdies on No. 2 and No. 3.

This tournament marks the end of the fall season for CSC women's golf. After an extended winter break, the Eagles will resume competition with two separate events in Phoenix, Arizona during the week of March 9. Chadron State will compete in four total events in the spring before the 2026 RMAC Women's Golf Championships on April 19-21 in Boulder City, Nevada.
