CHADRON, Neb. – True freshman
Macy Kleve ended as Chadron State's top finisher for the first time in her career, turning in a second round of 1-over 73 on Tuesday to help Chadron State to a ninth-place finish at the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational, held at the Powder Horn Golf Course in Sheridan, Wyoming.
The Eagles, who were also ninth out of 12 competing teams after the first round of play concluded on Monday, shot 75-over 651 as a team. Chadron State was closer to the teams in front than they were to the teams behind.
The Eagles trailed eighth-place Saint Martin's by just eight strokes and seventh-place Westminster by 24 strokes but had a 17-stroke cushion on 10
th-place South Dakota Mines and led 11
th-place Black Hills State by 34 strokes. CSC also finished ahead of Adams State.
Kleve, a freshman from Windsor, Colorado, had CSC's highest round of the day during both Monday's first round and Tuesday's second round and finished tied for 18
th place at 10-over 154.. Kleve shot 9-over 81 on Monday and 1-over 73 on Tuesday, when most scores up and down the leaderboard were better.
Kleve nailed four birdies during her round on Tuesday – the par-4 fourth, the par-3 12
th, the par-4 13
th and the par-3 17
th. She had three bogeys and 10 pars, with only a double bogey on No. 5 standing between her and an under-par score.
Not far behind was sophomore
Klara Kleinig, who tied for 26
th place at 15-over 159. Kleinig shot an 82 on Monday, then carded a 5-over-par round of 77. Kleinig shot 3-over on the front nine and 2-over on the back nine during Tuesday's round.
Freshman
Lauren Knapp tied for 43
rd at 25-over-par 169 after carding rounds of 83 (+11) Monday and 86 (+14) Tuesday. CSC's scoring five were rounded out by senior
Payton Wise, who tied for 47
th at 27-over 171, and
Allison Sanger, who finished 51
st among a field of 59 at 29-over 173.
Chadron State's next competition is in a week and a half, as the Eagles will visit Marshall, Minnesota for the Mustang Invitational hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28.
