TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Led by all-around cowboy
Seth Glass, the Chadron State College rodeo team had an outstanding weekend at the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo in Torrington on March 27-29.
Glass won the tie-down roping event and put down a strong first-round time in team roping to win all-around cowboy honors with 240 points across the two events while several other Eagles placed.
After finishing second in tie down roping at the Gillette College rodeo last weekend, the first rodeo of the spring schedule in the Central Rocky Mountain Region, Glass did even better at Eastern Wyoming. He roped and tied his first calf in 9.8 seconds to win the long go-round and placed third in the finals on Sunday in 10.1 seconds to earn the tie down championship.
Glass's back-to-back strong performances have moved him into third place in the region's standings in that event.
The Chadron State sophomore and CSC senior Pepper Rhine also did well in team roping, winning the first go-round in 6.6 seconds. While they did not get a time in the finals, the points scored were still enough for Glass to win all-around honors based on his marks at both events.
CSC senior
Bridget Romey of Hot Springs, S.D., also did well for the second weekend in a row in barrel racing. After placing fifth at the Gillette rodeo, Romey finished third among the 100 entries at Torrington with times of 15.88 seconds to tie for first in the opening go-round and 16.03 seconds to place fourth in the finals.
During the two rodeos, Romey earned 195 points and has taken the region's barrel racing lead with 455 points. That's 30 and 35 points ahead of the two primary contenders, neither of whom placed at either of the last two rodeos.
Another CSC senior,
Mary Gibson of Havre, Mont., finished fifth among the 104 breakaway ropers last weekend with times of 2.2 and 3.7 seconds.
In addition, sophomore
Tanner Olson of Gordon placed fifth in bareback riding with scores of 65 and 75 points. Freshman
Leighton Sander of Custer, S.D., also rode both of his barebacks, scoring 69 and 65 points.
Senior
Cinch Kiger of Overton, Neb., the region's bareback leader by a large margin, scored 72 points on his first bronc at the rodeo, but had some misfortune in the finals. That bronc banged into the arena fence and while Kiger was protecting himself, he accidentally touched the horse with his free hand. That negated getting a score on the ride, even though he completed it.
The next rodeo in the region will be at Colorado State University in Fort Collins on April 10-12.
