CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State men's indoor track and field student-athletes won eight events while the CSC women won three at the Birds and the Bees Holiday Open in the Nelson Physical Activity Center at CSC on Saturday.
The meet was a dual between the Eagles and the Yellow Jackets from Black Hills State, minus most of both teams' distance runners who are still recovering from the rigors of cross country this past fall. The meet was the season-opener for both the "Birds" and the "Bees", giving the athletes an opportunity to "spread their wings" after conditioning and honing their events the past three months. Neither team will be in action again until after the holidays, but Saturday's results in numerous cases were so impressive that both the athletes and their coaches were encouraged that their squads will be extra competitive both indoors and outdoors in 2025.
Chadron State College Track and Field Coach Jake Gruver said his team had "a great meet," with many athletes setting or challenging personal bests.
"This was a really, really good start to the season," Gruver said. "I can't wait until we're back from Christmas break to keep it going, but it will be imperative that the athletes continue training so when they come back in January we can fire on all cylinders and continue building off such an amazing start."
Team scores were kept. The Chadron State men tallied 232 points and the Black Hills men 178. On the women's side, Black Hills chalked up 186.5 points and CSC 164.5.
The meet produced two double winners, as Chadron sophomore
Chayton Bynes and Argentinian freshman
Camila Salvucci, both swept the triple jump and the 60 meter dash on the men's and women's side, respectively.
Bynes's winning triple jump of 14.91 meters, or 48 feet, 11 inches, is fifth on the Eagles' all-time triple jump listing, while Salvucci's mark of 11.71 meters, or 38-5, is the fourth on the CSC women's list.
Bynes's and Salvucci's marks also both currently rank in the top 10 in Division II so far in the 2024-25 season, with Bynes's leap the No. 4 mark in the country and Salvicca's ranking No. 9. Bynes's leap was good enough for a provisional NCAA qualifying mark, while Salvucci fell just .01 meters short of a provisional mark. The final CSC athlete to get on the national leaderboards as a result of Saturday's performance was
Ryan Clapper, who won the 200 meters with a time of 22.10 seconds, which is currently the eighth-fastest time in Division II this season.
Other CSC men who were event winners Saturday include
Christopher Cormier in the 400 (51.0),
Creighton Trembly in the 60 hurdles (8.19),
Parker Gonser in the shot put (47-11) and
Christopher Jennings in the weight throw (59-3).
In addition, Clapper, Cormier,
Nicquaine Henry and
Greg Logsdon teamed up to win the 4x400 meter relay in 3:28.76. Gruver is confident that if all the relay members remain healthy, they will run the event more than 10 seconds faster and be strong contenders to qualify for the National Indoor Meet.
Besides Salvicca's victories in the triple jump and 60 meters in her initial collegiate meet, sophomore
Eva Nitschke showed plenty of promise for the CSC women while winning the 60-meter hurdles. Another track athlete to watch is freshman
Mataya Ward, who competed in volleyball for the Eagles this fall and placed third in the long jump (15-11 ¾) and second in the triple jump (35-2 ½) in her first collegiate track meet.
