Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame
Brett Hunter is generally regarded as the Eagles’ all time outstanding wrestler. He is Chadron State wrestling’s only two-time national champion, winning at 165 pounds in 2007 and 174 in 2009.
With a career record of 133-32, he has more wins than any other Chadron State wrestler. He won at least 31 matches each year, going 31-11, 35-7, 32-6 and 35-8 over his four collegiate seasons. He was pinned only twice during his college career.
Hunter also has the CSC records for near falls (142), most technical falls (17) and team points (400.5). He was a two time regional champion and a four time national tournament participant.
He was inducted into the Nebraska Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in July 2019 and the National Wrestling Coaches Division II Hall of Fame in 2020.
While Hunter’s CSC legacy has been cemented based on his accomplishments as a student-athlete, he has only enhanced it with his time as the Eagles’ current head men’s wrestling coach. In 2023-24, Hunter completed his 12th season in charge of the Chadron State program, and it was his best season yet. CSC had a 10-1 dual record and went 8-0 against RMAC opponents, winning the program’s first RMAC championship since 1995. At the end of the season, he was named both the RMAC and the South Central regional Coach of the Year. His teams have an 88-66 dual record.
Hunter and his wife, Ashley, a native
of Sargent, Neb., have a daughter,
Paisley, and a son, Jax.
